Back to the main subject: "How long and how?"

The amount of time it takes for a beginner to feel confident in playing a chromatic harmonica can vary depending on factors such as natural ability, dedication to practice, and previous musical experience. However, with consistent daily practice, it is possible to develop a reasonable level of confidence within a few years, I think.

To build confidence, it is important to invest time in regular practice sessions, ideally for at least 30 minutes per day. Focus on learning and practicing the fundamental techniques, such as correct embouchure (mouth position), breath control, and tongue blocking or puckering techniques. Additionally, learning basic music theory and becoming familiar with chromatic harmonica scales will help one feel more comfortable.

It is also helpful to use resources like instructional books and online tutorials. Seeking guidance from a qualified harmonica teacher can significantly accelerate the progress and help address any specific areas of difficulty. This SlideMeister forum has ample resources such as tips and advices based on actual experiences of the members including a number of excellent harmonica players.

Most important of all: "Remember to enjoy the journey and appreciate the progress one makes along the way."  We kiss those harmonicas for FUN, don't we?

BTW, gig with folks in the memory unit yesterday went well. There was lots of toe tapping, mouthing of words and smiles. I only played about 10 songs and that seemed about right for the situation.
And you can play the same 10 songs in the same order next time, and no one will complain!
I miss playing nursing homes, a great place to share musical joy!

Well John perhaps I mis-spoke/wrote.  The video called them the Harmonica Madcaps.  Al called them "The Madcaps" harmonica duo.  Carl Ford is the blonde and Joe DiFulvio is the dark haired one.  According to Al's book Carl Fords widow contacted Al and asked if he would sell Carl's harmonicas at SPAH.  When the harmonicas arrived Al discovered the worn out gloves in the bottom of the box of harmonicas.
I am no historian.  Just parroting what I have read.
