New Cover Plates for my Saxony
« on: September 21, 2016, 02:41:04 PM »
Last week I got new custom made cover plates for my Seydel Saxony.
They are fantastic. No problems with sharp edges anymore and the sound is even better.
I have to thank Arnd Hoffman for the marvelous job. You should check his website he has built some beautiful
harmonicas: http://www.ergo-harmonica.de/

Full covers do sound different than tabbed. Same with Hohner 280 and Super 64.

Betcha $10.00 you can't tell the difference.

I'm on the Super side of this discussion, but mostly because I just love the clarity of the Super's sound. I got a really precise one first time out and it still plays beautifully today. The 280's are good (enough) but for 'me' not necessarily the best fit, which is why I gave away most of them. Just a matter of personal taste and I can tell the difference in sound between any of my 64 chromatics. The Hering has an entirely different sound altogether and when I play that one after the Super I notice heads turning and people looking to see what changed.

Where the sound differences become very obvious is from my Super with the wood covers compared to the other 3 Supers I have. As everyone else who's added wood covers to a chromatic can attest, there is a big difference in sound. Isn't necessarily 'better' (at times I miss the 'ringing' tone the wood covers tend to mute down),  but it's nice and suits a lot of my playing.

I also think full covers sound sound better. Maybe just cuz tabbed covers make it look like a big marine band with a button. Full covers also feel better in my hand without that annoying bump that exposes the obligatory razor edges of the reed plates. Yeah, I know: Waaaah- waaaaah!  I don't care, I just hate tabbed covers, peroid. That's my story and I'm stickin' with it! :)

@Bluesy: actually when I met Arnd to pick up the cover plates we were at the Seydel factory  in Germany.
By accident Bertram Becher head of Seydel Europe passed by and checked out my Saxony with the new
plates. He was actually pretty impressed by the difference in tone compared to the standard tabbed covered one.

Interesting, yesterday in my first post I attached pictures.
Now they are gone.
Well, just trying again ...

I am also adding a picture showing Arnd's custom harps: http://www.ergo-harmonica.com/

I like the look of these covers. Ergonomically they are obviously better - and he has also tapered the inside of the covers from low to high, which has to be a smart move 8).

I think that might be related to the recent crash? AGe said some stuff might be irretrievably lost and those who noticed (and who still had the photos saved) could repost them.
