You can get a WH10 harp made in China (a CX12 knockoff), tape the slide and half valve it and you have a pocket harp. You can find them on Aliexpress for less than a third of the cost of a CX12.

Thats sounds cool, do you think that configuration will be at least airtight as an valveless easttop?

Maybe this is the right time & place to discover exactly what 'half valving' means, clue me in....

A quick search here or in youtube will show you. In any case its simple: cutting half of the valves off :)

I haven't played the WH10 but I have played its big brother, the WH12. Out of the box they tend to leak, but with some magic tape on the slide and possible "haircut" of the valves they will play better than a valveless slide harp.

I didn't know a WX 10 existed. Just ordered one. Impulse purchase.

Thanks. Do you think that cut valves will stick less than full lenght ones when played in cold?

Also, just to confirm: the slide comes off like in the cx12 right?

They said I had one, but it didn't apply to this sale. OTOH, the "regular" price is $57, so I did okay. And free shipping. I had a WH 12 several years ago, but it was no match for a CX 12. In fact, it was the impetus for getting my first CX 12.

I'm sure it's no match for this custom instrument either--Brendan does great work, these plates are signed and dated 9/2003. These harmonicas have been used! But the harps come back to life, that's a relief.

The WH12 is the same mechanism as the CX12 without the quality control. I believe by the looks of the WH10 the slide would remove the same way.

I have two WH-12s; one to play and and the other that I dropped too many times. I keep it justincase I break something on the good one.  I seldom play my CX-Gold.

Hey Age, does the WH Shell fit the Cx-12 innards? - I just saw one on EBay last night for (if I remember) $57 - or thereabouts. Brand new, shipped free from China.
I thought I'd  memorized the name of the seller company, but could probably find it again (hadn't been on ebay in ages so decided to give it a look). Saw too
much to now have it in my head, lol. All I remember is their name begins with 'P'.

That's at least a better buy (for the cover) than spending $90 on a cx-12 shell, for those who don't have the extra funds, and need one --IF it fits, of course. Maybe one could
somehow sand off the W to replace it with a C?  ;D  Plus you then have all the extra parts - to use or not, in a  pinch?

PS: I know Jason bought a WH once - felt he'd gotten snookered because he thought he was getting a CX-12 for a great price. He was wanting to get into chromatic playing
more - at the time. He didn't like the sound as much compared to the cx-12's he heard being played around him.

I don't think they're talking about cutting the valves shorter (so they don't stick to the reed plate) when discussing half-valving. Half-valving
involves removing altogether half of the valves.

People like PTGazell play half-valved diatonics (means he adds valves to half - or at least several) reeds, to get a different sound than regular
diatonics (and preclude the necessity for doing OB's and OD's as far as I remember), but doing it on chromatics is quite different as Gary said.
Other work has to be done to the reeds and reed slots, which is why I haven't yet tried it. Playing with fewer valves means a lot less sticking in
cold weather, BUT makes the chromatic a lot more airy. If you can somehow resolve the airiness, you're good to go, so some people gasket the
slide (not something I'd do on a CX, but to each his/her own.
