Nah! Definitely a stink bug. I just Googled the little bugger and that's what it is. I don't know about the stink part, but they're so flat they're hard to kill. They still creep me out. (All bugs creep me out  :P ) Walking through a big spider web in a doorway is the equivalent to ten minutes of cardio for me.

I'm actually somewhat fond of praying mantis' though. (but they creep my out somewhat too)

They have their own website  stinkbugs.org
We get more of them when the neighbors rotate their crops and grow soy beans

They are common in Virginia, as are those Asian beetles.  We have an awesome bug called assassin bug.  They are beautiful in a grotesque way.  Google for a photo.

Anyone?

My sister had an infestation of them in Maryland a few years ago --and it was a MESS. When they die they leave such a horrid smell in the house (likely where some of the name stems from), and are extremely difficult to eradicate. They had to get exterminators in - at least twice. They seem to be cyclical - and like certain areas, but once they get inside and proliferate you have to take real action to get rid of them. I think she said there was a bad smell in the house too before they realized they were infested...I don't now remember all the details.

Hahaha - we DO have a lot in common. That'd be MY reaction walking into a spider web too. UGH! I'm not a bug lover at all. Like you I find a praying mantis creepily fascinating --but it's when she turns her head to check you out for lunch that I get the heebie-jeebies and quietly back away.  ;D

HALYOMORPHA HALYS. Dunno the name of this Chinese bug in English,  but in Latin is HALYOMORPHA HALYS.  It invaded also southern Europe years ago, and does not sting, but it stinks like he'll if you touch it......

I'm not keen on big spiders either but learned a trick that keeps them away for a good time. You place a few conkers in the corners of your rooms - spiders don't like the smell. The cats sometimes play football with them (conkers) so have to watch out not to step on them and go a over t!
