Toots Thielemans
« on: September 21, 2021, 07:26:04 AM »
Hello Everybody,

I am sure some of you are fans of the legendary Jazz chromatic player - Toots Thielemans.
Over the years I have built up a sizeable collection of his recordings from the 1950s onwards.
There's a track he recorded with Billy Desmedt called My Yidish Momme in the '50s, which I can't find. Can anyone help me to get it ?
I have a good collection of his recordings and I will be delighted to share any track you want.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Does anyone know if there has been a formal discography compiled of Toots’ work? Would make a great DMA thesis for someone other than me (I’m too old to go back to school).

Thank you Keith but that site doesn't play the tracks ! I did see this site before advertising Les Thomson and Toots' joint album but sadly I can't play "My yddish mama"!

SlideMeister has SO MANY fans of the inimitable Toots Thielemans here - and he has been discussed many, many times
as well as so much of his music. I'm afraid I haven't heard, or heard of this particular piece - and the link Keith posts
does play fine for me.

Here's another I'm unsure if you know about: 'Emmanuel' by Toots and the composer, Michel Colombier, from
Colombier's album 'Dreams' (piano by Fred Hersch). It is a stunningly beautiful piece of music, written by Colombier
upon the death of his small son. Later, Colombier's wife had it playing during the online tribute upon Michel's death as
well. Still later on, Chris Botti began playing this piece with various violinists - and it has become somewhat of his own
'signature' piece. I'm still unsure which I prefer: Toots' version, or Botti's (I'll post a link to my own favourite version of
that one).
PS: Just found another which is equally beautiful by Danielle Licari - simply using her voice as an instrument.

I was first turned onto it by Winslow - who is probably THE most learned scholar of Toots' music we have here on SlideMeister. and managed to track down the physical CD's through the help of Laina Freeman - an English SlideMeister and
friend.  There is an online link somewhere--I'll try to find it again.

Here's another link which may help - it requires a sign up to the site but you can cancel.

Yeeaaah. IF you mean the Toots version above, I can honestly say that to ME (and I don't care what anyone else says, this is purely my opinion), this is Toots' playing at its finest. I'd have loved to hear him play this way on album after album. So clear, so beautiful, so mesmerizing. You can feel the emotion in every note. I find myself going back to it time after time.
(If I could play like him on this beautiful tune, I'd be the happiest person alive).

Hello, Gautam.

I noticed that you have no "likes"
on your posts, so I added a couple.

The "likes" button is a gage of the
article's popularity, not an indication
of your popularity.

We all love you here.

Many thanks to Scotty and Laina and everybody else for your very helpful posts.
Yes, I do remember meeting both of you a few years back at the GSHF and may be at the Denver SPAH festival.
Could not attend any US festivals due to Covid travel restrictions and health issues for a few years.

Still trying to download "My Yddishe Momma" without much success.
But - "Emmanuel" is just wonderful. Toots pours out so much feeling and emotion that it brings tears in my eyes.

IMHO it would be nearly impossible to make a complete discography of Toots. I have so many "unofficial" Swedish, Belgian and Danish recordings...and big reel full of his live Dutch live recordings...

Gautum, do you have a commercial recording of Toots playing his own composition 'Latin Quarter'? The best I've come up with from my internet research is a photo of the cover of the sheet music but nothing to indicate that he ever made an actual recording of it. There are some YouTube videos of others playing it, but none of Toots.

On the other hand, I look forward to ´´Likes`` being removed.

Interesting
I'm not crazy about the "button" either, :P but hey, you guys voted for it. ::) Maybe we'll vote again in a while and see what happens.

I've earlier given my reason for liking the 'like' button. It has zero to do with 'scoring' likes, but everything to do
with letting someone know that their post resonated with me, even if I was unable at that time to respond. That's
all. (I do write lengthy responses and posts--mea culpa), but at other times my severe hand arthritis doesn't allow
so I've been purely frustrated and could only then ignore someone's post ofttimes. THIS gives me the opportunity
to let the writer know that someone in SlideMeister World did enjoy or appreciate their thoughts. This is especially
important for new people to our forum, I believe - who might otherwise leave, thinking they don't fit or aren't
welcome.

Hi LH,

Are you by any chance also looking for the sheet music of Latin Quarter? (Note that not all can of us can send personal messages). I would be happy to help you with that.

For what it's worth, I fully agree with Scotty on this "like button" discussion.  It's not a popularity contest!  Just a way to let folks know, "I hear you, and what you said had value to me."
