Interesting the mention of Bill Romel's plating.  I had one or two of his mouthpieces for old pre-war 280's - he designed an integrated slide channel that was never available on the older models.  He used a homemade plating method that was not as effective as the big production platers.  I had some mouthpieces done by one of those pro shops - I think it was Silvex - and the plating was more consistent and durable than Bill's.  Those companies do a lot of plating on brass instruments - trumpets and the like.  It's not cheap but if you have multiple pieces to be plated it's more practical.  As I remember it they charged by what they could run through together, not so much by the piece.  So one piece costs a lot.

I want to nail down the exact meaning of your description of dimensional differences between the 64 and the 64X versions of the Performance harmonicas. Please look at my picture and the dimensions A, B and C.

I think you mean that the mouthpiece on the 64X harmonica is bigger in dimension C than the mouthpiece on the 64 harmonica.

Regarding the combs:  Is dimension B the same in the two harmonicas?
Regarding the combs:  Is dimension A the same in the two harmonicas?

Regarding the cover plates:  Is dimension B the same in the two harmonicas?
Regarding the cover plates:  Is dimension A the same in the two harmonicas?

I am sure that you mean that dimension C of the 64X harmonica is greater than dimension C of the 64 harmonica

Can a cover plate made for the 64 harmonica fit on the comb of a 64X harmonica?

Do cover plates of the 64 and 64X have exactly the same shape?
