A little Bach and thank you Tom
« on: June 10, 2022, 09:55:22 PM »
Here is a piece by Bach that I was struggling with a couple months ago. Tom, (Grizzly) gave me some good advice and this was recorded in one take by my little marigold garden (which appears at the end). Thank you, Tom. Still not perfect, but I'm getting closer. The sheet music is from flutetunes.com. Tom gave me a few good tips, but the best was to listen to some good recordings of this. Now I am merely skimming the music as a reminder of where it is going, but the actual music is playing in my head. This might be the most ambitious piece I have attempted so far. I once thought it might be beyond me, but now I think in a couple of months I just might be "OK" with it.  ;D  A little more time and it should go a bit faster and smoother.

Nice job. "Now I am merely skimming the music as a reminder of where it is going, but the actual music is playing in my head."

That's how it's done! The progress you've made in learning this piece will carry over to whatever future project you undertake. Even in sight-reading, the music in your head precedes the actual playing by a few mili-seconds, as you get more experienced in reading music.

It may take awhile, but one marker of progress is to look at a new piece of music, and hear it in your mind's ear, the same way we read words silently on a page. A worthy goal!

I am reading sheet music on a stand. Cell phone taking video is on the same stand. Some measures have been memorized, but I still need to read along to put it together.
This fits on 2 pages. First page repeats. Second page goes through some variations.

Tom recommended listening to the piece more. Here is the version I listened to the most. It had a positive impact.

Cool!
Looks like it's all in your head :)
By "sheet music" you mean standard music notation - not tabs - right?

Correct. Link is to the actual sheet music used. Since this recording, I have played it without mistakes. It is not real difficult, just a challenge for me.

I am impressed, Bach is hard to play as it is quite difficult to 'separate' the musical phrases within the whole piece while still making it feel like a complete work.

I like playing Bach with my harmonica and even 'simple' works are challenging due to the phrasing.

Well done!

Nice job Beads. I don't play this on Chromatic but I love playing it on  alto Saxophone.  Sleepers Awake!  Thanks,

Nice job Beads! One take, my, my!

Glad to hear that you sense you're still moving forward on this tune.

Thank you for the tips and links Beads / Tom.

Playing Flute parts on my Chromatic is something I'm just delving into so, this was nice to read / view.
