Upcoming Long Island Zoom meeting
« on: January 05, 2023, 02:40:55 PM »
Next Wednesday we're going to have special guest Mike Caldwell attending the weekly Zoom meting.
Mike is a fantastic diatonic player who plays fast and accurately enough to give Charlie McCoy a run for the money.
Mike has been the Music Director/Featured Instrumentalist at Country Tonite Theatre in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee since 1997
Former Featured Instrumentalist in the Loretta Lynn Band.

Usually we take turns playing songs but I wouldn't bee surprised if Mike were to play the entire hour plus.
This will be the first time I'll get to hear and watch him playing Chromatic, I'm really looking forward to it.

I have a couple of videos with Mike I took at SPAH 2014. This is one of my favorites. Mike Caldwell, Tony Sgro and our own George Miklas

Let me know if you're interested so when the Zoom link comes out I'll send it to you.

Mike pranked me good last August.  We had been in Nashville for a few days and on our drive home decided to stop in Pigeon Forge and surprise Mike after his performance.  I had enjoyed a few days interacting with him and his wife Sandy at a Huntington, West Virginia Harmonicollege festival a few years ago and wanted to introduce my Sandy to them- maybe go out for steak or something.  For those who don’t know Mike, he loves to laugh and interact with folks.  I suspect he enjoys pulling pranks now and then.  He musta had an intuition he should get out of town the weekend I was hoping to surprise him and that’s what he did!  Yep, he took a few days vacation and left town and ruined my surprise visit.  Guess who the surprise prank was on. I bet he’s still laughing.

He is one of the best harmonica players I’ve heard and an even better human.  I hope I can join in the fun with you guys because it’s going to be a good one.
Be fair, be square and obey the rules of the pack.

Slim: I just don't do Zoom (not yet anyway), so amn't a part of these - but the meetings I did attend were wonderful. There were a lot of chromatic players  - some who came to the GSHC and Buckeye (unsure about SPAH, except for John Devine, the then President of the LIHC). You might see some familiar faces. Enjoy!

Okay, let's see see how many of these folks will wanna actually attend. We can make in open to everyone (not just the supporters) I can "newsletter" the whole membership just to make sure everyone gets a chance to show up. All we gotta do is come up with a good date. Anyone have any suggestions?

Date suggestion:
Thursday, Feb 2

That way, if that date doesn’t work for everyone, we can do it all over the next day😱😱

Sounds cool to me. BUT we're gunna hafta have more participants than just You , DannyG and me. C'MON YOU GUYS OUT THERE! WE"RE TRYING TO DO SOMETHING HERE!

I'm not necessarily trying to establish a weekly thing here; more or less like a SlideMeister Zoom meeting. Every week? Nah, just a little get-together. If it turns out to be an earthshaking, a thunderous success ::) we could talk about it, but for now, justa get-together. I'm not gunna belabor the invitation, I'm just asking. So far, we have three who are willing to show up. Stand by. I'm gunna send out a newsletter, and start a poll, and the results are going to be final.

I mistakenly thought that SM members were harmonica enthusiasts and would see the benefits of real time engagement with other players. Your response is just pathetic

Aw man. I missed the meeting with Mike Caldwell… I might be able to attend the SM zoom meeting. The first half of February will be tricky for me.

A SM Zoom meeting or meetings would be fun.  I would have liked to attend last Wednesday for the LI Harmonica Club Zoom meeting.  Mike Caldwell is a great guy.  But Wednesday night is a traditional church night for some folks.  I would love to attend a SM Zoom meeting on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evening.  Once a week, once a month whatever it will be fun.
I have been to SPAH and have spoken to Danny, Gnarly, Smokey and George Miklas knowing that they were SM members.  I doubt that they knew that I was a SM.  I do remember BeauKim being there but did not know of him as he had not yet joined.  I know there are other SM that attend.  So if we have a Zoom meeting as an added benefit I might be able to recognize some faces this year.

No need to insult us Danny. :( Maybe other people are like me, unable to figure out how to use Zoom, or don't have the
technology on their devices, or don't even have devices yet? I'm in that category. If I was able to - or the Long Island
Harmonica Club meetings had fit MY extremely complicated and rigid pet feeding schedule as well - I'd have been involved with them since I was (thought I still might be) a member of their Club. The onset of Covid here in NY seems to have put an end to the gatherings - so I haven't seen anyone since before 2020, although I'm hoping that eventually those Restaurant dinners and the outdoor meetings at Ken Korb's will start up again (or at someone else's home here on Long Island).
They were thoroughly enjoyable - the company, the food (we all brought food and he and Lora and others from the club cooked
burgers, hot dogs and provided the space, the stage and the hosting).

Some of us here simply either don't know how to go about this - or the timing doesn't work. Some have jobs as well - or are in school. It isn't a perfect scenario for everyone, AND there's a strong possibility most of the SlideMeisters haven't yet even seen the notice! I don't read everything every day - so isn't it a possibility other people don't as well? Please cut people some slack.

Maybe IF it isn't rushed - set a plan in motion for some time later on, you might get many more people interested as they become aware, and can figure out a date and time which works for all?

Fwiw, Age has this great logo - showing the SlideMeister 'chromatic' he put onto a card for me with my name. I inserted into an
old SPAH ID (with the clear plastic and worn around the neck alongside my SPAH ID). When people would lean in to read it, their faces would light up -'You're Scotty from SlideMeister!! I'm so and so'. It was a great way to meet other SlideMeister members - and to spread the word about SM to others who hadn't yet heard of us. I hope he still has the software - but I don't have a
printer anymore, so would have to buy a new one from Age since I've no idea where my original one is. There are also SlideMeister tshirts - but I don't wear tshirts unless they're long-sleeved. If some of those were made, I'd definitely get a few as
well.
