A long boot time is not normal for a Linux box, about half the time XP used to take, at least with the distro I used.

Maybe give MX Linux a try, basic setup is quite similar to a Windows box from what I've heard, & they have a very good forum, (I've used it, but it's a bit 'heavy' for my likings).

my motherboard and cpu are from 2009, ubuntu studio boots quickly, then after installing a lot of things, boots at the same time of the other two windows 10 of my family that aren't overinstalled...
i used more ubuntustudio that come with more music programs installed and easy to find (for me) than in mint 17 (i only tried it a little). Yes there's a learning curve, i don't like that things you have to do with the black window like msdos, (that save me the thing a few times), it's a thing that i can't learn at the moment, only  look for the solution in the net and copy and paste,  was a long way to install the print and scanner four years ago, but now it's easy... they're improving things... i was using ubuntu studio very happy with only musical programs musescore and a little audacity... but when the digital harmonica arrives... the use of midi programs bring the difficulty of the sound way in linux and that it's really a learning curve for me...  kxstudio born from people that want to give a solution to that problem, it's maked for musics... it's based on ubuntu 14, but they're making now the new version based in ubuntu 18...
After all this problems... i don't want to return to windows. The things when are learned are easy...  one of the advantadges it's the sofware center, if you know the program you put it there (write) and if it's a linux thing you can install it (free the most part)  from there, or you can write words like music, midi, photo... and chose from the options that come out, tha's a great advantadge...
one important thing is that if you have an outside soundcard, you have to look first if it is compatible with linux...    the companies aren't friendly with free software...

Just as info, I'm presently using a Raspberry Pi 3B+ as my desktop computer, running a Debian based distro, (as is MX Linux), it boots up into the GUI in less than 30 seconds, (haven't actually timed it), & works perfectly OK, even though it is only a 1.4GHz with 1GB ram. :)

am getting a new (but only 32gb) ipad for my birthday - because it's cheap -like hubby, lol  ('black friday' sale). his reasoning  is that it will cost more to keep replacing the glass on my existing one (it's old, the glass has been replaced once, is cracked again. i blame the cats although have no idea how it happened). should finally be able to download some apps and access SlideMeister better (can occasionally get onto SlideMeister on my ipad, but not always). it is a 'mac' technically, so that puts me with 1 foot in each camp?

So I checked out this thread because Scotty posted and I wondered how she was doing.  Then I saw this:

"running a Debian based distro, (as is MX Linux), it boots up into the GUI in less than 30 seconds"  -- Keith

I really think we should try to use the English language on this website, since it's based in the USA.   ;D  I have no idea what Keith's talking about.  Computer-y things, presumably.    ???

I have a billion-year-old MacBook and a million-year-old Google phone.  I got a no-name tablet to put photographed charts on, but can't find a decent program to alphabetize and access them.   >:(

When I was young, and we used stone tablets, it was more labour intensive but took less brain-power.  Now where did I put my spiral notebook, my slide rule, and my fountain pen?

thank you, james --appreciated. it takes far more time than i'm used to which stinks, but am determined. we scots are a stubborn lot. still in a lot of pain, but reading and posting is distracting. :)

thx Dana --appreciate your comments too. i thought i was the only one who thought i was reading hieroglyphics when these guys get going with their tech talk. it's hilarious--i know for sure i'm a dinosaur.

just got some new info about what was done in my surgery --my therapist thinks it's small wonder i still have such a high level of pain: there was a severe bone bruise (when i fell) (which she says is an extremely painful thing)... he chopped off the end of my collarbone (clavicle), removed the entire joint lining and a lot of tissue, removed part of the bursa (seems there was a lot of bursitis too). this stuff sure isn't for wimps. but i'm doing very well mobility-wise--she's very proud of me - sees major improvements at each visit. if only the pain would ratchet down a notch or two i'd be a lot happier. i love my therapist...my dog's in love with her (is sure she's here just to visit with him) and we have fun when she comes here. since we talked about possibly moving at some point, she now wants to buy my house in a couple of years. :) maybe this was all serendipitous.

hope you're both well. appreciate the good thoughts.

Since i am new here, I will still throw my hat into the ring.........PC.
I started with a MICROBEE (designed in Australia) with a Z80 CPU with 16kb of Rom and a couple of kb of Ram, good times then a 286 386 486 etc etc so a die hard PC guy.
Except I was in IT and supported Macintosh and Unix plus PC all the gear and the early birth pains of the Internet.
Now I run 2 x PC's android tablet and a Laser engraver off my own LAN through the house and separate garage, all fun of course.

Okay, since I just got another 2013 iMac with Catalina, I guess that means I'm kinda in limbo. I think Mac's finally admitting (by incorporating) that Microsoft has better processors and finally changed their screen re-sizing, fixed the mouse tracking to act more like a PC, etc, they finally kinda pushed me over the edge. For example, Apple accounts are a nightmare, iTunes is a train-wreck, Finder still sucks sox, and I'm looking for a better, one. Mac mail is cumbersome, and OSX doesn't work well with Thunderbird or printer software, and a whole bunch of other things I still hate, but it does seem to move faster on the web. :P (at least for now ::)

TBH, I never wouldda even started messing around with a Mac in the first place, if there was a version of Garageband that worked with an iControl for the PC, but that's where I am right now. I still use my PCs for all the good audio editing applications (Adobe Audition, BIAB and the like,

I gave my MacMini to my son last year, just for playing music, whose yet to fire the thing up. I have a 2007 iMac that's good for nothing, (OS-wise) so I'll probably just convert that one to Linux, and see what I can learn.

Limbo man! :)

I got my first PC in 1999 and then switched to Mac around 2009 because I wanted to carry on using Logic which was Mac only by this point. I built my first Hackintosh last weekend!

Thirteen years and a few student media labs later. Mac. Still using GarageBand to record multi tracks. Still using my snowball. It’s three laptops later, must for a teacher. I’ve made books, did and taught photography and editing, made a few movies (actually started a digital media academy at my high school). Some of it was old towers, but most minis. They were and still are, no doubt, simple, robust, and more than powerful enough for a guy or a student who just needs to get it done on deadline.

Currently I have a 2012 MacBook Pro, plugged into an abandoned 55 inch tv and an 8 tb drive. Yeah, I still have my old scanner and 600 dpi laser printer.

Keep thinking I’d like to mic my ipad and do all of it through the little guy. No rush. All my gear just works. The other thing is almost all my software is the same stuff, in new generations, that upgraded for free, that I always used. Sometimes learning bumps, but no real curves.

Best regards,
Ed

I'm a fan, have it on both my tablet and phone. I've made just a few tracks so far but using it a bit more for warm up practice.

PC running Linux. (Debian with I3 window manager)

As with a harmonica, I want my computer to do what I tell it to do when I tell it to do it. I don't want to constantly confirm that I know what I'm doing (even when I don't ;) ), I don't want mandatory updates and I don't want to sign agreements to give any company the right to monitor what I do with my stuff. I like to be treated as an adult.

Sure there's a learning curve and I'm sometimes stuck with things I can do. I rest assure though that very few things are impossible, and somewhere there's an an answer. Often a quick web search is enough.

If I wanted everything as simple as possible and didn't care for performance I'd be playing a melodica instead (or stick to playing mp3's.)  :)

Update: 8)

PHONE:
I have an Obama-phone with no maps, no aps, no nothin  (just phone camera and text) but never use any of that stuff except for answering an occasional phone call from my vehicle. (truth be told, I loathe cell phones.>:()

COMPUTER(S) (I have somewhat more of a tolerance for those)
I'm still most comfortable with Windows XP & 7, (which I don't have on nothin' anymore) but (besides a few tablets) I now have three old Macs (four, counting the "07" mini) two Windows 10 notebooks (one for everything and the other just for Band in a Box) and an i7, fire-breathin' desktop that Gabe gave me /w three hard drives and 24 gigs if RAM. All have SSD's in them. I only use "spinners" for storage. (Just the graphics card in that monster dims the street lights)

Okay, I use the 2013, Catalina, iMac to run this group, the 2010, High Sierra iMac in the studio downstairs just for Garagebang, and the the old 2008 iMac now has Linux Mint, which I'm trying to get all the drivers for and learn to use.

I kinda like the idea of using each for a specific purpose. Oh yeah, and I have Express VPN on everything.
