Thank you all for your warm welcome! I posted a few days ago for the first time & although I didn't receive as many replies as I'd hoped for, the answers from a few of you members were very insightful!! So yes, I'm going with the Hohner 270 Super Chromonica Tenor C AND the Hohner Chrometta 12 Key of G. As a newbie to this forum I'm asked to introduce myself so... My name is Jonny Fair & I am the leader & vocalist of the Xtrordinaires, an original 9 piece Southern Swing jazz group, recording on the Blue Tone label for Arlington Records. I have been playing harmonica my whole life but only on an informal indeed, inveterate level. I focus more on the writing, singing & business aspect of things & so as a result, my harp suffers for it. I do have a dozen or so recordings with & featuring harmonica but they are all with Hering harps. Except for one recording, with a black CX12 that I was VERY disappointed with because the engineer miked/recorded it all wrong. Sadly, it ended up sounding like a weak, thin, plastic piece of crap! The Herings, until just recently, I always got at wholesale prices so of course I had many. I found however that they were a tad trill (compared with hohner) & not very sturdy. So along with my CX12, these two Hohners will be welcome additions. I've heard it said that any harp is a good harp & I wholly concur! Thanx again to everyone for the kind words of wisdom & encouragement. I'm looking forward to learning more from this forum and I hope I can be a helpful addition to someone, somewhere along the line.

jonnyfair1,
just came back from your myspace and enjoyed the band very much.  sounded pretty slick to me.  the blue letters on the black back round are a bit hard for these old eyes to read.  once again nice sound.
thanks

Hy i am Jo from Austria,

i started to play chromatic a few weeks ago - it substitutes my earlier musical engagement on the trombone.

It's very interesting and I like to play classics and operetta songs.

I hope that i can get some good instructions - to practise i have on my own, i know.

Hallo Jo... Ich habe in Oestereich gewohnen. Wo sind sie?

Dave

Before Age busts my chops.. I said I have lived in Austria and asked where Jo is...

Hey all!! New membrer here! a bit about me...

I am married, 31, live in San Diego and have a 1 year old baby boy....

I started playing the OTHER kind of harmonica, th D*&^^onic when I was 13 or so, played pretty steady till college then got into hip hop and became an MC in a Reggae/hip hop band (mystic roots) for years...

When baby came recently, forced me to not tour anymore, so after a few months, I started jonesing to play music...Didnt have a lot of money to put towards it, nor the time to learn somethin gbrand new, like guitar or Bass, so...... I picked up a couple more of those OTHER harps, and a small amp and mic... started playing... but it just wasnt hitting the spot like it used to... so I found a Chrometta 8 used on EBAY.  I know it is nowhere near the best chrom out there....and I would not buy one brand new for 60-70 bucks, but I got this puppy for 16 dollars, including shipping that is a deal!  .. I cleaned it well when I got it, the covers had some very light surface rust, but the reedplates were rust free, as was the slide.  After cleaning and reassembling, I then tested it out, and every hole was dead on!  I love its small size, fits in a pocket and I bring it with me in  my car and wail away all the miles I drive.  The tone is sweet to my ears, although obviously my ears are not yet capable of noticing the difference a better harmonica would make.

I also puchased a Huang Cadet soloist for 12 dollars (12 holes solo tuned, but no slide, no semitones, but also bends really well and has no windsavers) and then more recently, found a Golden Butterfly WH12 on Ebay for 35.  Never played a CX12 to compare with, but this thing rocks! I love the smooth action and being able to take it apart so easily!  My next purchase will be a cx12 tenor, somewhere down the road, after I am good enough to deserve it!

I am mostly practicing scales still, working on 3rd position d minor blues, and learning some melodies, but man am I having fun doing it...

So I feel lucky to have gotten such great deals to get my feet wet with the wonderful chromatic sound....Being a new parent, the wife would not have understood or condoned a 100+ dollar chromatic purchase.

So, I am here to learn as much as I can, and meet some like minded individuals..

Anyone recommend a good chromatic book? or books?

Thanks in advance!

Hi MJ:
Congratulations on your new baby :)

I have quite a collection now of Harmonica books as well as books with CD's.  I'd make a better list but am trying to limit my typing as much as possible for the mo (have an injured shoulder).

.. bought at least 10 Hal Leonard book/cd combo's (all with 10+) songs on them to 'jam' to...mostly jazz but a couple are R&B, Soul and pop standards...only disappointed in a couple (backgrounds sound 'midi' and not like a real band to my ears, which I prefer).  The books are basically sheet music with 'some' instruction.

The instruction books I have are good..one I know without checking is Douglas Tate's (our former President of SPAH  as well as a SlideMeister prior to his passing): "Make your harmonica work better" which will demonstrate the inner workings of your chromatic even if you don't believe in all of his methods, and Mel Bay's 'Complete Chromatic Harmonica Method' by Phil Duncan with both a CD and DVD.

The only argument I have with Mr. Duncan is that he is a tongue block 'purist' and I don't play tongue block....nor do I hold my other non-chromatics in my left hand as he instructs.  Doesn't work for me.  So if one isn't a tongue blocker and ignores those orders (lol)..he gives a lot of great musical information,  If you ARE a tongue blocker, it might be a great instruction book for you.

I just glanced through the two book/cd's play along series I thought you might be interested in:  one's for tenor sax..(I don't focus on harmonica since my theory is that any 'lead' instrument can take the place of another and I'm very partial to sax)...that one is 'Soul hits' and has 10 great songs including Dock of the Bay, Stand by Me, In the Midnight Hour, I got you (I feel good); Feeling Good; Heard it through the Grapevine, etc.

the 2nd is R&B and covers 8 songs: Ain't Too Proud to Beg; Brick House; Get Ready; I Can't Help Myself;I Got you;Heard it Through the Grapevine; My Girl; Shining Star (EW&F's version)...it is tabbed and has the sheet music and lyrics but the tabbing on the one I bought is for guitar (a mistake, I thought I ordered the sax or flute version), so doesn't 'quite' work for me..but then I really got them just to play along with the backing tracks.

I haven't played along with these much, yet....have been mostly focused on my jazz tracks.  They're only a small example...I got mine from Musician's Friend (online), but there are many sources...even Borders & Books can order them in for you..but I prefer to search online.  Just google 'Hal Leonard playalong' and you'll have tons to choose from.

If you look at this link of harmonica books, halfway down the page is the 'Jazz and chromatic harmonica heading...with a couple of the above books.

http://www.elderly.com/books/full_list?cat=400

hope something of this helps a wee bit. :)

BTW, my newest 'fun axes' are all CX-12's in different keys.  My first one was bought in pristine condition off EBay for only $70 (last year), the other 3 brand new at $139 each.  So good bargains can be had if one is lucky

The prices has gone up a bit since you got yours but there is a new on on EBay right now for that price: $139. Really tempted me but I dont need another harmonica.

What's this with "need"? Just kidding; but if there's a CX 12 in your future, I'd say grab it. They won't get any cheaper, and even the used ones on eBay sometimes go for more than $100 these days.

Is there a(nother) CX 12 in my future? I sold one; have five now, and another on the way (as soon as my check clears). I think I'm set for the time being.  ;D

actually...I just bought them in November from Harp Depot (at the Garden State Harmonica Festival) for that price.  Maybe he gave me a good price because I bought three..but I'm pretty sure it was the actual sticker price per unit.  That's the thing...you can pay a lot less than listed prices by getting your harmonicas AT the conventions: Buckeye, SPAH, GSHC etc...which is why a lot of folks save up and wait to buy their new harps when they go to the Conventions (saves any shipping costs as well).

I just checked their website and it's listed at $174.95 and in A,C,D,G and Tenor C. However, I bought both a Bb and F CX-12 at GSHC from them....so other keys ARE available not listed on the websites.

At Buckeye I helped Ruper Oysler set up the Seydel 'store', and there were so many kinds of differently keyed harps than I'd before known existed coming out of the boxes, I felt like a kid in a candy store :)

Hey y'all!
After over 30 years of playing bass pretty seriously I've embarked on the project of becoming a good chromatic harmonica player. I was always a melodic bassist following (distantly) in the footsteps of players like Eddie Gomez and Steve Swallow. More and more over the last eight years I've gigged less and less on the bass while at the same time becoming more and more attracted to a voice-like singing sound I was hearing in my head. I've also always loved Toots and Larry Adler and the chromatic harmonica just kinda fell into place as the perfect instrument for me to say what I need to say.

As of the last couple of months I've given all my basses away and am totally committed to the harmonica. Real glad this place exists...thanks.

Hi,

I'm Kitty.  Until recently  I used to play the flute but developed arthritis in my
right thumb and now can't even hold the flute. Going through an old storage box
I found my old Hohner 10 hole diatonic which I used to fool around with. I
realized now was the time to get more serious about learning to play well.
(I'm sort of getting up there in years).

It doesn't seem to bother my hand and I love the opening video of this forum.
I can't imagine that I'd ever beable to play anywhere near that well.

I ordered a Hohner chromatic 14. At least that's how it was listed. Not sure
if that's my best choice but figured I have to start somewhere.

I had a hard time finding my way around this forum as I'm used to the yahoo groups
forums. Hopefully this message is in the right place.

Welcome Kitty.  Harmonica is a new hobby for me too. I never dreamed that a harmonica could give me a sore arm but the muscle in my left forearm was sore for several days as I got used to holding the instrument up for extended periods of time. Just wanted to prepare you for that. Other than that its been a joy.

Hello, Kitty (couldn't resist :P),

I'm a flutist too, but still able to play despite my arthritis. I assume you're getting a Chrometta 14, which is a nice instrument. As a fellow flutist, I would suggest that you keep in mind the Hohner CX 12 as a future harmonica (there is always a future one lurking in the shadows). They're the same range as a flute (minus the low B, if you have a B footjoint), and respond really well for classical music. I play some Marcello, Handel, Telemann, Bach, even the first two movements of Bloch's "Suite Modale". Gluck's "Minuet and Dance of the Blessed Spirits" is particularly nice.

Welcome!

hello rgn39

if you want, when you're tired you can try to play laid down mouth above, with a cushion underneath each elbow, this's also a good exercise for move the harm. without move the head...

rgn39, Doug Tate recommended keeping the left arm parallel to the ground, the right at more of an angle. You may need to give it a rest to let it heal.

Kitty, you'll find out (if you haven't already) that the arm position is nearly oppoisite that of flute: left wrist cocked, right wrist straight on flute, nearly the opposite on harmonica.

With my very painful left upper arm/shoulder (possibly torn rotator cuff)...it's been making it well-nigh impossible for me to hold my chromatics as I'm used to playing them...so lately I've had to actually play one-handed....and being an amateur does have its benefits  :D

...luckily, the CX-12 (with its big, fat easy button) lends itself quite nicely to that style of playing...I was even able to get through an entire number with the button held in...

It's not easy, but I managed.  Every so often, and keeping my left arm tucked... I'm able to just use the tip of my left index finger to support the edge of the chrom...

Not sure I could do this with my Super 64, however..so I'm restricting my playing to the CX-12's in the meantime..
