Take Me To The Garden - Gregory Porter
« on: November 19, 2022, 06:44:18 PM »
Age: thought you might like this one. I just heard it for the first time (I've become a bit obsessed with Gregory's voice)

I thought this was especially beautiful - and played along where I could on my A chromatic.

PS: It just dawned on me (after watching this again - and again and again, lol) that the title is NOT 'Take me to the Garden', but 'Take me to the Alley'. I've no idea how I mixed it up, but mea culpa.

That's the first time I heard that guy sing. Wow! Great voice. Strangely reminiscent of Johnny Hartman.

His voice is so soothing!  The religious part of his background comes through huge in this song.  The "King" who they are preparing the streets for with "shiny things" is obviously Jesus.  And ... sure ... that King wasn't interested in being the center of attention and being among those who had no need.  He wanted to be taken to the alley, where he could minister to and be among the afflicted.
Sneaky, ain't it? ;)

Brorat: those who know can read into it and between the lines but you are NOT allowed to bring religion - or politics onto the main site. Prayermeister is for that. We have people from all Countries and of all faiths here and it's one of Age's cardinal rules, despite his own religious background. The rules are for everyone.

I thought you'd listened to this first one of his - which I posted just recently. I'm crazy about him (now that I've
discovered someone 'new' to my ears). ;)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na01DRa_XH0

There are others which are also wonderful.

His song is pretty much "in your face" with religion, Scotty.  I didn't put it here initially!  Someone else did that!

Again, I love the guy's voice, but as far as "religiosity" goeth, ~I~ thought the "message" was something between cryptic and shallow. If it were to make the preacher in me say "Amen!," I know I wouldda had to pull it, but it didn't, so I didn't. :)  Since I'm personally a bigger fan of the kind of message that makes folks squirm, than I am, the the "nice thoughts/positive energy/ warm & fuzzy" stuff, it totally went right under my radar.  ;D

I disagree. It's implied and again, one can read into it and between the iines (if one chooses). His background would lend
itself to that idea, but as Age verified, it's not to be stated here. Fwiw, I posted the song thinking Age would enjoy his
voice, the song, and the 'play-along' musicality of it. Gnarly gave a great background on Gregory which I hadn't known before. I love his melding of song and cooking (two of my favourite things).

You might enjoy that after I'd posted a couple of comments on 'If Love is Overrated' (a short while back), I recently noticed that there were responses to my comments on youtube - checked them out, and it turned out to be Gregory Porter himself! Out of all of the hundreds of comments by people raving about his voice, the song and some who've been huge fans of his for years, already - he seems to have liked my comment and chose me to receive 'gifts'. I've no idea yet what that might be
but am hoping for some of his music?  Now THAT would be cool. ;D I only noticed him respond the same to one other person - so I thought that was nice. There may be a lot of others since I did not read all of the comments but it's still fun! He will be coming to a theater in Brooklyn in 2023 and after that one of his upcoming gigs is at the Royal Albert Hall in London!

I think so too! I SO want to go - it's in February. With my luck we'll be under feet of snow, lol (it's a looooong drive). ;) I lived in several different areas of Brooklyn but amn't quite sure in which area he'll be appearing. I would SO love to see him sing Live. The guy's brilliant. I'm listening to other songs of his: 'Insanity' and find myself falling in love with each one.
