Seydel Nonslider Chromatic Harmonica is moving :o)
« on: February 18, 2022, 12:08:03 PM »
I was actually toying with the idea of getting one myself till
I saw the price. :o Eee Gads!! Are you kidding me?

Okay, it's official, the Seydel Nonslider Chromatic Harmonica
is moving to the diatonic board. No big deal, just makes sense.
Yes, it's cute, and true, it is a "chromatic," but it:
Plays bends like a diatonic
It doesn't have button
There is no "Slide" to "Meister!"
So off it goes to the diatonic board. :)

You'll notice, I even made a "Seydel Nonslider Chromatic FanClub page for it,

Where does that put chord and slideless bass harmonicas? The Soprano and Alto Singles by Suzuki? The Tombo S50?

With the exception of the chord harmonica, these are all, despite the lack of a "slide to meister," more chromatic than a slide chromatic, which is for all practical purposes just two diatonic harmonicas ganged into one comb, with a lever to access each one..

"SlideMeister" says nothing about two Richter diatonic harmonicas in C and C# joined together. and incorporating a slide, without the implied intention of being played chromatically. Some of them didn't even have valves.

Regardless of whether harmonicas are diatonic or chromatic, they're being shoehorned into just two restrictive categories. No better is classifying them by bending technique.

I propose that there can be a third category to go along with slide chromatic and diatonic (which is an inadequate fit for the aforementioned chromatic harmonicas in the first paragraph). "Slideless Chromatic" seems to be a reasonable name. That would be a satisfactory compromise.

Now, where to put chord harmonicas… ;)

It puts all the others exactly where they were when I started this forum from the get-go. The same "Orchestral" harmonicas (Base, Chord, Harmonetta and even the "zipper") are right where they've always been. The Alto, Supranos, etc are "all blows" so they're okay as well.

When something new comes out, I'll put it in a board that I determine minimizes "sifting and sorting" (which is why SlideMeister was built in the first place)

I considered a third selection, but there may even be too many boards already for some folks. Just trying to maintain efficiency.

If I have to move EVERYTHING that's not a regular, garden variety, Chromatic (with a slide and a button) I'll do it.

Then maybe another name besides "diatonic" for the non-slider chromatic harmonicas plus all the diatonics—like, "other" or "non-sliders" or "everything else." Putting non-slider chromatics into the "diatonics" slot seems inaccurate, at least. You'd still have only two categories.

I pretty much did that by creating a "stickied" fan club thread:

Yeah, I guess that works. After all, there's a CX 12 fan club that I started back when rainbows were still black-and-white.

No problem, we can still talk about it. :)

It definitely isn't for Slide Meisters everywhere - but it is a great new concept in playing chromatically. :D

Yeah, I'd consider one myself if the prices weren't so dear.

I like mine fine, and it has a specific purpose for me and that is one hand chromatic capability. Obviously, it is pretty responsive being a Deluxe Steel. The only question I have is whether the elimination of the slide is worth it to the long time slide users.  Heck, I am a mere newb compared to y'all, and I slip and slide through tunes without knowing the slide action any more than flipping a row on the Nonslider.

I may be humbling myself with tongue-in -cheek, but I know better than most of you about various  acquisition syndromes. I have many thousands of dollars in the latest equipment, most of it to get something new.  If that is the case, have at it.

Remember the Age adage: It is not going to make you play any better.

It has to be considered against the Deluxe Steel, pricewise, (£40 cheaper).  ;)

Yeah, tell me about it - I can never be happy with just one of anything, (unless it's exceedingly expensive, then I usually don't even have one).

I bought mine, because it was a new concept, & it could do bends like a diatonic - it's a great chromatic, but I still mainly play with slide chroms. :D

(.....& quite often with valveless.)  ;D

Same could be said of wives. I've had two (but not at the same time). :P Expensive, but not exceedingly so.

(Substitute "spouses" for a more PC squib.) ;)
