Pets Whaddyagot?
« on: July 18, 2021, 12:56:48 PM »
First of all, Mama is deathly afraid of dogs, and dislikes animals in general, so we got nothin'. Growing up in Cleveland, we had seven rooms, and nine "regular" people. We also had lots of others (my immigrant cousins from Hungary) who kinda lived there for a few weeks while getting settled here in the States. We also had pets. Looking back, I have no idea how we all fit in that little house, but somehow I don't remember ever feeling "crowded."  Crazy! :P

We also had pets; two birds, and two Toy Manchester Terriers and a cat or two, and an "outside" dog in the back yard. For the last 57 years I've only had two "junkyard dogs" and one cat at my auto wrecking yard, and one rabbit here at the house. Since my rabbit croaked ten years ago, I only have "short-lived guests"  ::) called ground hogs (wood chucks) that usually loose the will to live when they get within 89.5 yards of my upstairs window. ::)

Aaaanyway, what do you have? (include pix if you like)

When really young, we had a couple of dogs, at different times, then the usual small mammals, (rabbit/guinea pigs/mice/etc), as kids.

But mostly cats....usually they would just arrive & make themselves at home with us.  :D

Lately though, no pets, & I don't think we want the expense of vets bills any more.  ;)

We have a dog, and 3 cats. All but one of our animals is male. I live in a house full of women, so I like to say I'm the only non-neutered male in the house.

I have pets, but they are wild.
They stay outdoors.

Birds; squirrels; deer; racoons;
turkeys (yes, wild turkeys); and
rabbits and others who pass by.

Haven't seen any snakes, gaboon
vipers or platypuses.

I avoid expensive vet's bills that
occur with indoor pets.

Long ago, on tour in Florida, I made
friends with very small gecko lizards,
about the size of a small finger.

In the hotel, they were everywhere.
They climbed the walls, and ate
mosquitos and very small insects.

Best Regards, Stay Healthy

Currently, just one, Ruby, 13 y. o. calico cat that son Jeff left behind ~6 years ago when he moved to Colorado. (Pic, maybe, if I can find it.)

We've had two dogs, both passed away, since before we moved to Vermont. And our daughter Megan had rats, mice, a corn snake while she lived here. The snake is still alive.

She's moving back, with our grandson, the snake (presumably) and her cat, Astro, ~8 y. o. She's also had a toad and an axolotl, but I think they're both dead.

Speaking of vet's bills, Ruby needs dental work to the tune of $800-1000. We'll find it somehow. She's "my" cat. Cindy preferred the dogs.

There are between 6 & 9 cats that show up every morning for breakfast.
I get out of be, go to the kitchen sink to start my coffee & open the shade
over the sink & up pops 2 - 4 heads looking in at me.
It started out with 1 skinny cat begging for scraps of anything. I hate to see
any animal hungry so I fed it. And That's how they get you. It's a trick!!
Before long it's like Oliver. May I have more, please?
Anywho, that's my animal tail of woe.

I have 2 dogs. They are both rescue dogs.  Since 1974 I have always had 2 dogs. When one passes away I get another rescue dog. I find that it is easier to train a new dog if you have and older dog to help with the training. They are trained to be in door pets. What they like best is the back yard, it is 84 feet deep and 80 feet wide and completely fenced. 3 sides of the yard is bounded by trees with another 7 trees in the yard. That gives the dogs plenty of critters to chase and bark at. It is easy to get them back in the house, I just say, ( Who wants a cookie ? )

A-Hah! The tag-team approach! I've heard that's the easiest way to get the training done.

I used to be scared heck of dogs.
Not those little Chiwawas or poodles... those bigger more aggressive kind.
Those who bark and growl at anything moving.
Started after I was attacked as a kid.

Had a female mutt once... dumb as a shoe.
Would chew on anything including broken glass and pebbles.
Kept her outdoors - couldn't stand the stench and fur loss.

And there was Chico - the cat.
Started out as a week "old" kitten. Kept him till full grown.
When he started to jump up high places like resting on top of the kitchen cupboard,
or pacing back and forth on the kitchen counter while we're trying to prepare something,
OR sharpening his claws on the wooden furnature!! (Hmmph!!)
that's when I started to get very annoyed with him. As if that stupid mutt wasn't enough.

Though that cat was a pretty clever bugger.
He learned to open doors in the house by jumping and hanging on the handles.
My mom advised to replace them with round knobs and that solved the issue.
Maybe with time he'd even master a chrom - who knows :)

Didn't like those pets.
I was really glad to wish them "Bye and never see ya'" when my ex moved out with them.
Whew... A relief!

All in all I like animals...when they're not mine!! :)

Bingo! Obviously my brothah-frumma-nothah-muthah! ;D

New Neighbors have a little girl that Barbara and I have completely fallen in love with, AND a cute African Basenji that absolutely loves the snot outta me! When I'm in my kitchen, he just sits at the end of his rope and stares at me. When he hears me in the yard, he gets excited and cries till they let out. The people next door have no idea why he does that. Aaaanyway, yeah, I play with him a lot. ;D ;D

Ed Brock: When you feed outdoor cats that rounge through the neighborhood, do you use the TNR (trap, neuter, release) care that keeps unhomed cat population from growing endlessly?

My grandson has a great dog. Another grandson has a great cat.
To me, pets are like boats and swimming pools:  it?s nice to have a friend who owns one.

Wow... you hit a sensitive nerve :)
Street cat population here is terrible!! They're all over the place...  I've had twice a mother birth kittens in my toolshed. Could barely enter cause she was so protective. Raaar... Raaaar

Now my nextdoor neighbor has the same problem. No neutering done around here.

Trap, Neuter Release    has some expenses.    If the expenses are a problem for you, look around in the local social media. You probably can find someone with a soft, loving heart for cats who will cover the expenses.

One local media where you can find information about TNR, trap neuter release, is NextDoor.com.  NextDoor.com is a website where we can ask for recommendations for refrigerator mechanics, ask for recommendations about local schools, and advertise lost or found animals, etc., etc.. Gaining admission to NextDoor.com takes some effort, since their admission process screens out rifraf and con artists.

Yeah, my daughter has a pit and black lab mix and (had) a registered Pit-bull that just went to that big doghouse in the sky. (don't know how to spell deseast) Inside the house, they give me some kind of allergy attack that lasted for a few days, but wrestling with them outside on the lawn, the two of them routinely beat the crap outta me. (just gotta be careful not to roll in those land mines /bio hazards.)

Granddaughter had a Pit. ("Samson") Cute as a button but it got so mean, she had to send it out to the "dirt nap" people at the pound.

Brother Jimmy had a Rot puppy that grew up to run around the yard with 4 inch thick X 6 ft. trees that he'd find in the woods

and this little lady that came outta nowhere and decided to sit in my car

We currently have a Flat Coated Retriever named Guinness. We have owned the same breed for the last 30+ years, we usually have two dogs. I have been showing  dogs in conformation in Canada and the US, Guinness is a Champion dog in both countries.

And....
coming in late to the party again!
I've developed allergies to dogs and cats.  Maybe from living on a boat with a dog and cat for 10 years.
So lately I got:
hamster #1 (bit me.  3 times.)  Hamsters live 2-3 years, so not a big commitment.  'Oreo' is currently biting people in Hamster Heaven.
hamster #2 (sweet, but boring. goes to bed when I get up. Gets up when I go to bed.)  'Wobble' is 1.5 years.
And,
Scooby Dooby Doo, my gerbil.  He's great!  In the evenings, he explores around my feet and crawls around on me.  He sits on my knee to get petted and 'scritched' until one or the other of us gets bored with it (usually me).  Gerbils live 3-4 years.
You can be in Tokyo or Alberta at four in the morning in your hotel and you can still practice if you feel like it. A trombone cannot do that. - Toots

Some of you may know Pierre, he’s been to several SPAH conventions, and appeared in a couple of my videos.
He’s not doing too well, just turned 15 and I fear he’s not long for this world.
We are taking him to the vet tomorrow.

I have a really old pet rock named Stoney. He’s good company…no back talk. He’s inexpensive…no cost to feed or board. He’s quiet and usually agrees with me.
I really like Stoney.
