Carolina Harpfest
« on: October 18, 2021, 04:08:35 PM »
Made my way home from Todd Parrott's (VERY EXCELLENT) Carolina Harpfest yesterday afternoon. The venue was outstanding, The instructors played sets at the evening shows and they were terrific. The seminars were aimed at diatonic harmonica players but there's a lot of great advice that pertains to anyone who wants to be a better player, Dave Burgin's was one of the best seminar I've ever attended. The band was just fantastic and the members helped the instructors during their seminars. Here's a picture of Todd and the other instructors having a Question and Answer session. Left to right, Emile D'Amico, Sandy Weltman, Todd Parrott, Dave Burgin, Richard Sleigh and Jerry Fierro

Thank You AJ! Finally managed to stop out and visit with Danny earlier in October, played musical saw for Danny and his neighbor, and got to hear them play their Harmonicas as well :) Danny plays a mean Chromatic, and his neighbor does some nice playing on the bass/diatonic! We jammed out a little, me on saw, Danny on Chromatic and his neighbor on bass. Was a good time hanging out with two cool dudes 8)

I'm getting to the point, with my harp, where I'm playing some of my favorite melodies without thinking about where the notes are. As we all know, that is a key moment

First time we ever played with a saw singing along. It was fun, hope we'll do it gain

Fwiw, some people don't realize what a fantastic moment that is, but some of us do. :) For me, I simply don't care where
the notes are, it's all about 'the sound' - and it looks as though you've gotten there. What a break through!
Congratulations!

Hi Scotty

Congrats!  I can appreciate what you are saying, as I reached that plateau a few months ago.  I surprised myself when I started hitting the right note from the start by simply having it in my head. At the same time, I must admit that I play on keyed chroms only, and don't always play the accidentals correctly the first time through.

Nonetheless, it is a milestone that gives our journey to competence a needed boost.

Fantastic, Bernie! I play on a key of C chromatic quite a bit, although my preference is an A chromatic, as well
as other keyed chromatics, such as Bb, Eb, Tenor C and even a B (among others here and there, but mostly the A).

It IS a breakthrough and an 'aha' moment when you hear the sound in your head and get it right away on
your chromatic. To me that is 'playing by ear', but just the hearing of it in your head is a huge step...and is thrilling
for me to have other people say they're doing what I've always done. It makes me less weird and I LOVE it! :)
