Ashokan Farewell in F maj
« on: March 21, 2022, 06:51:14 PM »
I was playing around with Ashokan Farewell in the key of D.  After a while, I decided that the breath patterns in D were just going to give me fits!
Soooo ... I decided to learn it in the key of F maj.  I've been noodling around with it this afternoon, and this clip is only partial.  You'll get the idea.  I'm trying to put in the "grace notes" that would be played on fiddle.  First time trying that.
I have worked out the tabs for it in F if anyone is interested.  Be glad to post it.

Nice fiddle type ornaments. Solo the key doesn't matter. At an Old Time jam the fiddlers are going to go with the original key.  :)

Thanks Gary. Don’t have an A. If the opportunity comes up for me to accompany Jay Ungar and his fiddle, I’ll work harder😱😱 or I’ll buy an A.

Just downloaded the sheet music. Plays fine in D, but I was just playing the dots as written and not trying to add fiddle type ornaments. I suppose because of the easy pace of the tune that D wasn't hard. It does need a 56 (or 64 or an Orchestra tuned) to play as written on a C instrument.

That’s another reason I moved to F, Beads. I was using a 14 holer in D. For me, D isn’t easy at all!  Too much draw for old lungs!!  Playing in F sounds good to my ear. So does playing in C but I’m working to learn other keys. Playing in F also allows comfortable play with a 12 holer C instrument.

Here's my home made tabs for Ashokan Farewell.  I've tabbed it in D major (original key) and in F major.
Due to the breathing patterns in D, I am still finding it very difficult on my C solo harmonica.  I find the version in F much easier to accomplish.
If using the D major version, you'll need a 14 or 16 hole C solo tuned instrument to get to all the lower notes.  In F, a 12 hole solo tuned C instrument is fine!
Enjoy, and please let me know if you find errors.

A is a popular keyed chromatic.

A covers the sharp keys nicely.

Very nice rendition, and the tune does lay out well in F, lots of draw notes in good places. Thanks!
