And from a decade earlier, something a little more upbeat.

A song that is now of course a very well known jazz standard - but here we go right back to the songwriter's own interpretation - from the late 1920s.

And here is a great instrumental interpretation.

Another original recording of a standard from way back in 1934.

Very interesting to compare it with the classic 1971 recording of the same song - got to love that trumpet 8)

"You Took Advantage of Me," Rodgers and Hart. It's on Slim and Penny's "Topsy Turvy" CD. (I also have a nice rendition by Bobby Short on one of his albums.)

Strange that it is blocked in the US and not in Europe. Must be a Google US legal issue. Thanks AJ for posting the alternative link.

Umm, not quite ;) I've tried to watch a great many videos only to find them blocked as being 'unavailable in your Country' (I'm in the US). I suspect it might have to do with the last set of updated copyright rules passed in the UK?  Here's a link:

Howdy Amnesiacs.

Here's a forgotten song that may be unknown to many:

Strangers on the Shore, by Acker Bilk (Bilik?).

See? I've forgotten the composer's name.

Best regards

Mr. Acker Bilk (someone once said that "Acker" means Mister, making his name from the dept. of redundancy dept.)

Jerry Bilik was a student at the University of Michigan, and eventually a theory and arranging teacher there. After some years there, he ran away to the circus—Ringling Bros.-Barnum & Bailey, to be exact. True story. He was one of my teachers. He's in his late 70s now.

There is a well known song from the 193?'s , that uses Barnum & Bailey in the lyric, good one for the harmonica . Try guessing before checking the link.

Hello, Forgetful Ones.

Grizzly, thanks for clearing up my confusion about Acker Bilk. The song, Stangers on the Shore, was the theme of a BBC television series in the early 1950s.

I studied some of Jerry Bilik's books at UW-Milwaukee. They were excellent.

Best Regards

John B. Broecker
(The "B" is for Bilik)

Nice work jazmaan - that's why I started this thread. I know you guys think I am crazy - but the idea was to put some good old tunes into people's heads and maybe they will enjoy playing them on their chromatics.

Ok - let's hear it for Acker Bilk 8)

A well known old, old song from 1922 - made very famous when it featured in a Hollywood comedy movie in 1958 - for those who like clues.

I like this version - a little live piano duet featuring Stephanie Trick, whose youtube videos are all first class - check out her solo stride piano work.

Here we go back to 1918 - the last year of World War 1 - when this old song was written. Stephanie and Paolo again working together to give a very sensitive interpretation of this piece.
