Many thanks to Brorat for introducing me to this lovely, old song from 1922 . So I wanted to include it in this thread, especially with Remembrance Day coming up. This 1922 recording is, I think, the original version.

Just listening to this song brings back so many memories of my youth. This song, along with so many other "forgotten songs", were included in the little book we used in elementary school at our "Friday Assembly". Many were patriotic, and we sang with gusto and without apology. Then there were tunes like "In My Merry Oldsmobile", "My Darling Clementine", "Erie Canal", "Down in the Valley","I've Been Working On the Railroad","My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean", "Shake Those 'Simmons Down", "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain", ... and so many others. Music and singing became a shared love for all of us.
