Very impressive! I just took my Chromatic and played a very complicated bottom, boogie-woogie lick that Smokey showed me, then tried the same lick on the 265. While I was able to play it on my standard double bass, (badly :P) I could never come close to the speed you hear in the sample below!

I don't care who you are; it's physically impossible ever touch that lick, (with this speed) on a standard double bass, however I'm sure I could do it easily on that slide bass.

So it's a good investment to have this modification done? It improves the instrument in a remarkable way?

It converts the standard (or extended) double bass from the slow, somewhat clumsy and awkward instrument that it is, to what amounts to a smaller (cuz it remains closed) easier to handle thing that actually works more like a Chromatic.

While I'm sure there will always be the "old schoolers" who continue to romanticize the old designs, I believe this new innovated bass attachment is probably destined to replace the bass harmonicas as we know them today. I know if I were a bass player, I'd be all over this thing.

Hey, what's not to like? It doesn't flop open and shut when you handle the thing. Guys don't hafta figure out where to put their big noses  ::) when they play them. (mine kinda gets stuck between the two decks) The less "aesthetically challenged" players will be happy to know that their good lookin' faces can actually be seen by the audience. (and not be hidden by that upper deck)  New numbers will be easier to learn. Even micing should be a lot easier with this new design.

AJ, thank you for your review. I am one of those " old schoolers" who is convinced that this conversion will revolutionize the bass harmonica. Given that the former agility consideration is now nullified, more folks will learn to play the bass, which may lead to more harmonica Bands!

Yes! Once folks see how much easier this new system makes the bass, it might very well increase the popularity of the instrument :)  Kewl!!  8)

I thing it's a great advancement for the bass but do you know if Brendan planning on making this available on the extended bass too ?

I received an email from Brendan that he is discontinuing production of the EXTENDED SLIDER BASS.  There is one left as of today, but he says that when it is gone, there will be no more made for the Hohner 268 Extended Bass nor the Suzuki SDB-39.

To explain, his decision is due to the complexity of building the bridge unit in two pieces due to machinery limitations.  Brendan went on to say that he may resume production in the future, if and when he acquires the machinery to produce the bridge as a one piece unit.

This does not affect the availability of Slider Bass units for the Hohner 264 and 265 and Suzuki SDB-29.  These will continue to be produced.

Bad news :(.

I guess it must have been very tiresome to get two perfectly printed parts and then have to glue them together.  Do you know if the remaining sliderbass is for Hohner or Suzuki?  Thanks.

Brendan has one mouthpiece and slider remaining.  He will build one last "extended bass" bridge for either Hohner 268 or else the Suzuki SDB-39.

Thanks to George Miklas and Brendan Power,
I'm "up and running" on my Hohner-Power
slider bass #265.

If you'd like a slider bass to traditional bass comparison,
Play C and C#, 24-hole solo diatonic octave harps (Huang
Cathedral Twin) together, like a standard octave bass harp.
Then play a standard 12-hole key of C slide chromatic harmonica.

At SlideMeister, we can't make comparisons between diatonics
and chromatics, so we've only shown the path to a comparison.
You decide.

Thank you John for the note.  Here is my video that demonstrates the super fast C-C# trills that are attainable on the Slider Bass.  Click here for the video.
