Danny G's 2020 Party
« on: April 11, 2020, 12:28:23 PM »
I never thought I'd be alive and not have an annual harmonica party but depending on what Ohio's social distancing rules are in July, it could happen. So for now, we'll just wait and see what happens.

The year before we moved the party from under the triple big top tent with a back porch stage and out to the party barn one of my best friends, Grizzly Warner first played his new original song "I Got My Hippie Back" for us. Sorry to say that Grizzly had a fatal heart attack earlier this year.

Surely this is one of the signs of the Apocalypse.

OK, calm down, I’m only kidding.

Or . . . am I?

Let's not get hasty here, if it looks questionable, maybe we could move it back a month or so? :-\

Danny, hoping to make it to the party. I'll bring my barge of a Dodge truck and my chord harmonicas out. I'll try to drag LJ and Liz out too. They've been sitting around a bit too much, getting kinda dusty. They need to get out of the house more  :D

Talking with some other players about coming out to the party too.

The Party is going to happen July 10 - 11 and 12
We will comply with the government guidelines in effect during July
If you want to attend or cancel call or email us so we don't overcrowd
So far we've only had one cancellation due to concerns about the covid virus
We're going to limit the number of people allowed inside  the party barn at one time
We're going to have Bruce's new 50' x 80' barn available as well as outside seating
We're going to have the  usual food buffet but lt won't be self serve this year

I’d like to hear more about the plans for this party and any reports or videos from previous parties...if anyone dares to self-incriminate! What happens, cost, where do people stay, should I bring a chaperone?

Thanks!

It's an 8 hour drive from Central Connecticut University.
There are several motels/hotels costing between $55/per night to expensive within about 15 minutes or you can camp for free.
Here are a few videos, I'd be happy to post more but my as much as I love my guests, they can't be quiet during performances.

Jam 1 2012
https://youtu.be/u6LH6xRnFIE  With the temperature around 100 F., attendance was down but it was still a great party. Here's Ingo Andersen from Burlington, Canada (harmonica), Jim Rumbaugh from Huntington, WV (Bass) Bruce Spratling (Suzuki Bass/chord) and "Lockjaw" Larry Youmans jamming with a couple of Al Smith's newest students. Andre the tall one and, I'm sorry, I don't remember the other guys name.

Jam 2 2012
https://youtu.be/pQ2OveuP96M    Jeff Smith, Dave and Rob Ross have been playing together for allot of years as part of Norton Ohio's Shack Shakers Band and this is the 2nd year that they have performed and backed up guests at Danny G's annual party. Jim Rumbaugh is president of the Harmonica Club of Huntinton, West Virginia. Alex Windmeyer, our 13 year old Chord harmonica player spent about 4 hours earlier in the day getting pointers from world famous chord harmonica player and Suzuki harmonica endorser Al Smith and is the grandson of SPAH vice president LJ Atkison. Bruce Spratling who is playing Suzuki's new Bass/Chord harmonica lives in Florida and is a well known regular at blues festival all over the country.

https://youtu.be/KA09tNtmeYA  Grizzly Warner – Friends  2009

https://youtu.be/x1vl1nKaEec  Friends getting together for 3 days of open mic jamming. Totally unrehearsed, Al Data, former chord player with Jerry Murad's Harmonicats teams up with Suzuki endorsee and lead player for the HarpBeats Phil Caltabellotta and bass harmonica player Bob Nelson who performed with the Tops in Blue and appeared on both the Arthur Godfrey and Ed Sullivan shows.   2009

Such a beautiful day I thought I'd pull out and grill some of the burgers Linette froze for the party. I about gagged when I opened the freezer. 8 hams and maybe 30 - 50 pounds of rotten meat does not smell good.

Two steps forward, one step back.

I'll share some good news with you soon.

Aaaargh! You poor thing, that's just awful. Was it a freezer breakdown, or a power outage? There's nothing worse than that smell.
Been there once. ugh. I bet you're both kicking yourselves over 'buying in advance' - yet, what choice DID you have? Can't win. :(

I'm curious - since i've never been to one of your parties although I'd love to get there one of these years...do people chip in a bit, or bring 'stuff' to offset some of the costs? I know it'd be impossible to bring the kind of food all the way to Ohio I usually did to the Long Island harmonica club parties (a lot of good food from our favourite Italian restaurant), and everyone brings 'something' while the club provides hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks. Ensures that there's a TON of food to please everyone....but somehow I get the impression that you and Linette are doing all of this on your own?

Scotty,
Several people bring covered dishes and last year enough hot dogs to feed a small army came all the way from Missouri.
Yes, we always start early now we'll just start over. The freezer just died, don't know why.

Either I missed this - or did write a response which got 'et', lol. That's sad about the freezer dying. Have only had that happen
once - and I do remember that horrible smell. Nothing quite like it. I'm amazed, though - how people manage to bring food
from so far away. Very cool. I'm hoping this year's party is a huge success (I'm positive it will be). I'll be thinking of you guys.

Anaheim, California? That is about 4 or 5 miles from me - only been to the Angels stadium one time through my employer years ago. I'm here in Santa Ana in Orange County. :-)

Thank you for the invite too! :D
