You guys, please, please, please be careful while you're having fun. I don't think this is a political issue, and I'm not trying to start a (forbidden) political discussion, just concerned for those attending...

Our local community college has banned singing and playing of wind instruments on campus during the pandemic due to the increased risk of spreading the virus as a result of these activities. The following article is from the university of Iowa, and I've read similar elsewhere as well:

https://medicine.uiowa.edu/iowaprotocols/wind-instrument-aerosol-covid-era-covid-19-and-horns-trumpets-trombones-euphoniums-tubas-recorders

Here's an excerpt:

------------

Specific Risks of Wind Playing

    The Issue of Aerosols

Much attention has been given to the risks of singing, largely because of early superspreading events. The mechanism of singing requires deep breathing, vibration of the vocal folds, active manipulation of the larynx, pharynx, tongue, and lips, and produces aerosols which can hang in the air for at least hours. Some individuals produce significantly more aerosol than others, for unknown reasons (Asadi).

Risks of playing a wind instrument are probably different than those involved in singing, though there are similarities. The flute, for example, creates a strong airflow, though other instruments do not. But airflow does not tell the whole story. Playing a wind instrument involves deep breathing, sometimes forceful exhalation, and possible aerosolization of the mucus in the mouth and nose, along with secretions from deeper airway structures. The only peer-reviewed, published study on a wind “instrument” and aerosolization investigated the vuvuzela and found significant aerosol production (Lai et al.). There is, therefore, at least a theoretical risk of droplet or aerosol transmission during wind performance, but more study needs to be done.

But do have a wonderful time!

Our parish is back to having mass with reduced numbers to allow for social distancing. No singing!  We were given the same reasons Slim shared. Those with health concerns watch it live online and can drive up and  receive communion in the parking lot afterwards.
Yes, have fun, but maintain some distance. I would hate to see the prayer thread fill up next week.

Playing Trumpet/Cornet is a risk. As there is something on them called a: 'Water key'. Which is for all practical purposes a (excuse the language), spit valve. I have seen players manipulating these constantly. Dripping all over the place. Whereas I always carried a handkercheif. Which still wouldn't be that great..under the present circumstances. :)

Danny also has an outside stage set up this year, and if need be, we can probably go next door to  to Burce's new 50'x80'x30' building which (with all that new -geo-thermally cooled concrete) is actually pretty comfortable, temperature wise)

Slim, your warning is noted. Let me assure you that Danny is on the spot with precautions. The very first order of business is taking temperature of everybody in their vehicle.

I'd like to mention that masks, gloves, and sanitizer is available free to anyone who wants them.
Hand sanitizing followed by gloves then mask are required for anyone entering the food court.
No children permitted in the food court. (Period)
So far everyone has followed the 6 foot rule.
It's 92° and sunny

Afraid to die but not afraid to live

Glad to hear all that, Danny. Please keep in mind that 6 feet may not be enough distance from anyone playing the harmonica (or any other horn), and of course... masks are believed to be very helpful in keeping those in the vicinity of the wearer protected, they are not so good at protecting the wearer. That's why everyone who can should be masked (regardless of whether or not they are symptomatic), not just those who are worried about their own health.

Have a fantastic time, but please be careful :-).

Upon arrival Everyone has to get their temperature checked and log into the area.  After the chilly storm passed this day is looking wonderful.  The foods are plentiful and delicious. The company is the best.  What a party! 🎼🎶🎵🎶
