While we still don't want and discussion on this one either, take as much space as you need to tell us who or what was (or still is) your greatest source of discouragement?
and
Has it changed over time?
(in other words; did you make any converts? and so on)

Discouragement? Who gets discouraged and why? I'm looking at the top side of grass and that beats the alternative. I refuse to be discouraged and noone can make me!

Mine was most of my family members, except for my parents (and my D.P. cousin Johnny who arrived from Hungary in 1959  :) ) Even after all these years, there are a few family members who think anything that doesn't involve the physical equivalent of someone in a ditch with a shovel and dirt flying in the air is frivolous nonsense.  Sometimes I inwardly thank these folks, cuz with my personality, this is the very stuff that help keep me going all these years. The good news is the ones who haven't died already have begun to come over to my side. Hopefully they'll all come over before I croak! ;D

Hello, Sliders.

No one person, no concept, no technique has discouraged me from playing the slide chromatic.

If the wall is too high, I go around it.

Best Regards

My Mother,

When she heard me playing she bought me music lessons
for any  instrument except the harmonica - a waste of money.

The only source of discouragement for me is the price factor when you convert the $/Euros into rupees and also the availibility of harps in India.

Valves.
Windsavers make our noble instrument sound like a kaz00.
If you take the time to get them installed flat, they are less of a nuisance--but a nuisance they remain.

To paraphrase Pogo: "I've met the enemy and it is I".  The primary reason being a lack of discipline to get better--a plan--and the fortitude to follow the plan.

I'd have to say at times, I'm my own greatest source of discouragement: (a) striving to believe that I have something that is worth developing (an annual battle it's been), (b) making time between jobs; (c) I have to agree with McManus about just playing....

Nothing discourages me.
Sometimes I think I don´t get a good sound (specially after listen Larry Adler ;D). And often I´m not happy with my vibrato.

No one has been a discouragement.  However it is discouraging not to have chromatic players in my community.

I don't know if I perhaps reported this in another thread but the thing that made me put my 260 away in a drawer for ten years was the solo layout with the adjacent C's. I thought it was stupid and would not abide it. It made me think that the harmonica was just a poorly-conceived folk instrument, something along the lines of a tin whistle.
I wonder if it had had a bebop layout, whether by now I wouldn't be a heck of a lot better player by virtue of not having lost ten years out of my harlomica playing.
Ain't life a beatch?

Me. And PBS.

I have no self-discipline at all and I get bored easily. I can't practice scales. It has to be a tune I like a lot, or I won't persist in working at it. If something becomes a grind, I stop doing it and switch to something more pleasurable.

PBS? Yep, if I'm playing and an interesting show comes on the tv, it's almost always on Public Broadcasting and I just have to watch, so I stop playing.
