Air Leak in Kongsheng Lyra
« on: October 31, 2022, 12:25:22 PM »
Some time ago I purchased a Kongsheng Lyra Gold.  I've really enjoyed it, and play it often.  Recently, I took it apart to clean it, and afterwards I tested it.  I found that at the upper register, there was a lot of air leakage.  Right away I decided it was my fault!  I had done something wrong, but didn't know what I had done.  Well, after a few tries, I've found the issue.  It's easy to make this mistake, so I thought I'd point it our to hopefully save others some trouble.

The Lyra (silver or gold) has a 3-piece mouthpiece/slide.  Instead of a traditional bumper, the Lyra has a small silicone ring that fits into the slot in the slide itself.  This small ring was my issue.  If you look at the photo below, you'll see where the ring fits.  In my case, I had the slide sitting on the ring.  I guess because the ring is very thin and made of silicone, I didn't have any issue with pretty good slide movement.  I couldn't tell the difference!  Anyway, when I took it apart this morning, I made certain that the slide was flat on the bottom part of the 3-piece unit, and that the ring was actually sitting inside the slot of the slide.  (There's a ring on the other end, too, but as far as I can tell it's just a spacer as it makes no contact with the end of the slide.)

Just be careful that the ring is fitted as shown in the photo below.  When I did that, the harp magically returned to its normal "air tight" state!  Duh! :-[

I have 2 of those on the bench this week to service. The Kongsheng seem to have a lot of small parts that fall off when you take them apart. My customer lost her silicone ring so I have to see if I can make one.

I spent most of yesterday working on the 2 Lyra's in the shop.

Those metal plugs that fit on the mouthpiece are taken from a much more expensive Japanese model harmonica, Cremona. I not sure if they originated the idea.
I had problems inserting it too.  I found one side of the plug  is slightly wider than the other so you have to properly insert it or the mouthpiece assembly will not go on correctly. The plug with the silicone gasket also has to be at the button end. It will not screw on correctly trying to install it at the other end.

While we are on the Lyra, my customer complained about the buzzing noise on the low to middle end.  Upon checking the valves they were all sitting flat to the plates but yes, they did buzz and create this weird harmonic overtone on mostly the draw but also blow notes.  After some testing it was concluded that the valve material itself was the problem. It is too stiff causing the reed to slap against the valve when first engaging the reed.   Between both the Gold and Silver Lyra I replaced 12 windsavers on the low end with Vern Smith's designed Ultrasuede valves.  The harps are ready to ship back to CA. but it was a lot of work to get them right.  I'll start a separate post on how I solved that problem.

Great job Blowhart!  You’re addressing exactly what I’ve found with my Lyra Gold. Can’t wait for your follow up thread.
Thanks.

Mike,

Are the Vern Smith valves currently available?  If so, where might I find them?
Thanks.

Mike,

Thanks.

I'm gearing up to start production. I'm making a larger device than the one Vern provided for pressing and heating the ultrasuede.  I decided to let the buyer cut them down to the length they need. I will make 2 sizes based on the hole 1 of the 16 hole models and one based on hole 1 of long slot 12 hole models. Maybe sell in packs of 12 or for full replacement.  The Ultrasuede is treated to be water resistant so you will be able to immerse your plates in an ultrasonic cleaner.  I'm just not sure which glue will work best.  I tried Super glue gel and that works great but I'd like to try DucoCement which I use for regular windsaver replacements and see how well that works with Ultrasuede.  I should be ready to sell them by Jan.  I want to stockpile a bunch to have them ready for immediate shipment.
