Has Anyone Played the Seydel Chromatics?

(1/6) > >>

MJ137:
Hi,

Came up with another question to ask you guys (by the way, thanks for all the help/information about my other questions). While conducting my search for my first chromatic, I came across the Seydel & Sohne line of chromatics. I was wondering if anyone on the forum has played or owns a Seydel chromatic & can attest or comment on the sound, tone, playability, etc. of their instruments.

Thanks again for your help. I promise, one of these days when I become more knowledgable, to start answering questions instead of asking so many.

Yeah, I have A Seydell Standard 40.
This is a good harmonica to carry in case of a harmonica emergency.

It is a well made, 2½ octaves, with a plastic comb and mouthpiece that has round holes. As a beginner you have not picked your battle grounds (Wood comb vs. plastic, round holes vs. square etc.) but you will.

It also has no windsavers. The great part about that is you do not have to warm it up before you play, and you can play when it is cold outside, without worrying about the windsavers getting screwed up. This convenience comes at a cost....it is a bit leaky.

The sound seems thinner than a Hohner... but then I think all non-Hohners have a lesser sound. (Another mine field)

My opinion, this would be a great starter harmonica. Inexpensive and rugged, I play mine almost daily. But I wouldn't use it at Carnegie Hall.

I have  a Seydel Delux and love it.  It is lighter in weight than my Herings and takes less air.  The sound is as good as the Hering at least to my ear, perhaps a bit lighter than my old Hohner 280. Of course the new Hohners sound light when compared to my old 280.  Since I dont have a 270 I cant compare with that.  Would I buy another?  A big yes to that. In fact as soon as I can afford it I am going to try a diminished tuning from Seydel.  I bought mine through Seydel USA which gave good prompt service.  I wish Seydel made a 64.

Hope this helps, D

Yep! Have one in C  I like it a lot, but wish is was in another key.  Got too many C's as it is, and C is not my favorite key (too high for me, especially in a 12 holer)  The Seydel DeLuxe has a mellow/dark tone, very close to that of a 270, and a lot more air tight. The slide action is short, smooth and tight. The over size of the thing is smaller than the 270, easier to handle and more comfortable to hold.

I recently purchased a delux. Like it a lot. Very playable-just like the Honer's-but it is difficult for me to offer an opinion when comparing tones since since most of my Honers are CX-12's which have, to my ear, warmer tone than metal cover harps. The tone of the Seydel seems thinner than my 64's but it is quite a bit smaller than a 64 which might have something to do with it. I am going to get  another Seydel someday. It is seems to be a quality instrument. Would you want to try a CX-12? They have the advantage of composite combs and covers and you can take them apart easily for cleaning, etc. Seems that people either love them or don't care for them at all. They have the disadvantage of being a bit large. Good luck. Whatever you decide on, you will like playing a chrom.
