I think I am a good representation of the average person in that it took me 69 years to stumble upon what a great instrument the chromatic harmonica is. Its a shame that for whatever reason it has not reached the superstar status to which it belongs, imho.

Don't know whether this has been posted already. It's an interview with Larry Adler which I found interesting.

Unfortunately you will have to put up with some idiot from 'Star Academy' singing along side Stevie...but Stevie does get his Harmonica out and play in this clip.

Anybody know of any YouTube's featuring Asian players using exotic (to the U.S.) harps?   Tremelos, harp switching - that sort of thing?

hello jazmaan

here  http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=eC0N3iddgi8   Jia-Yi He, he's SlideMeister member...

I wonder what harps he's switching between or among?  I can't even tell exactly how many he's holding, is it two or three?

It's three harps. I remember looking at his harp array onstage at SPAH 2009 - they were all the translucent-green-combed five-dollar tremolos you'd find in any Chinese variety store on the west coast. You don't necessarily need expensive harps to make good music. (Not that he's playing them stock. He may have gapped, tweaked, created special tunings and who know what to get the results he's getting.)

Impressive that he has such a nice orchestra behind him.

I was under the impression that these harmonicas were available in lots of keys, even minor keys. Jia-Yi has held as many as four or five in his hands, and for more complicated music, lays them out and picks up the ones he needs.

Why bother? Chords, man! He can harmonize any melody with the right choice of harmonicas, and play really fancy tunes by picking the ones he needs to play a certain scale or transposition. Cool.

Huang (and possibly others) sells a set of C/C# harmonicas that can be played like a chromatic, but with two mouthpieces and no button. If anyone has ever seen a Tombo S50 chromatic, it's the same principle. I'd consider switching if it were better made; the tone is tinny and thin. But I am able to get around on it almost as easily as a button chrom.

Here's my latest vid.    I'm not playing any harp, just singing, but Mike Polesky is featured on Solo-tuned Chromatic.  Also featuring Llew Matthews - piano,  Jimmy Garafalo - bass,  Paul Kreibich - drums.

Never wore it on stage yet. I don't think I could get away with it in church  ;D
