Song of the day 7/5/22 "Mac the Knife"
« on: July 05, 2022, 09:02:42 AM »
Here's a challenge for you. ;) (it certainly was for me) If you play keyed Chromatics, it'll keep you reaching for another and if you don't, it'll keep you thinking. It starts in B flat, and modulates, five times (if f I counted right) all the way up to E flat. Play it! I dare ya!

Bobby Darin was a really talented guy.  I've always loved his style on this song.
Didn't even try playing it yet.  (I think it's over my head at my current stage!)
I did sing along, though.  The last couple of modulations took it to out of my range!
Which reminded me of something that happened last Saturday night.  The local philharmonic orchestra played a concert for Independence Day weekend.  They were set up around home plate at the local Class A stadium.  Janet and I had seats slightly down the third base line, but close enough to home plate that they were great seats.  They started with the Star Spangled Banner, and asked the audience to sing along.  I was lustily doing my part until we hit "...and the rockets' red glare"!  I -- along with most of the old farts around me that I could hear -- dropped down an octave until the got to "Oh, say does that ...".
Used to be able to hit all those notes.  What happened?

No, Janet is playing organ (sub) at a local church on Sunday. I’ll be singing or playing by myself on the drive up.

Tough one...!

I think dropping an octave isn't a  bad idea on harmonica either... I do that on some melodies where a part of it goes right to the last hole ... 😄

BTW, there was obviously no editorial check on the lyrics that accompany this karaoke song ;)  It's like a foreign language in some places.  Like when someone leaves a message on my iPhone and Apple tries to "transcribe" what was said.  A bunch of my southern friends throw a total monkey wrench into that effort!
