Some problems with my new harmonica discovery 48
« on: December 28, 2015, 03:17:01 AM »
Hi everyone
Im just a beginner in playing harmonica, but after working for a month with a 24 hole golden cup I decided to buy a hohner discovery 48 from internet.
But now the problem I have is with the hole 2 draw which i make it sound hardly.
I read somewhere that for diatonic harmonica the same problem is normal for beginners but my harmonica is chromatic.
Have you ever had the same problem like me?
My second problem is with the holes 5 6 7 blow. When im playing them there is a sound like a click. Its more like a half closed gate and when i push it more (i mean blow :) ) the gate opens and and the sound of the note just comes clearly. But after playing for about 10 15 minutes it will be fixed. Actually i think Its more because of the harmonica being new and also the necessity of warming up before playing but anyway I need your guide and help and experience on these problems thank you.

Hello, and welcome.  Congratulations on your purchase of the Discovery 48.  It is a good harmonica.

When you are playing hole 2 draw, try letting a little air come in through your nose at the same time as you are drawing air in through your mouth, that may give you some success in playing that note.

Chromatic harmonicas often have plastic valves that cover the metal reeds for the purpose of channeling the breath more efficiently to the reed.  The harmonica would not produce very much sound without these valves, and the tone would also be poor.

You are exactly right about the warmup:  when the harmonica is not warmed up before playing, your breath condenses on the reed plate, to which the valve then sticks.  The clicking you hear is the valve popping loose from the reed plate when you blow hard enough.

In order to fix this problem, trying warming your harmonica up before playing it.  I usually hold the harmonica in my hand for a minute or two, or put it in a shirt or inside coat pocket, and that warms it up adequately for me.  If you put it in a pocket, be sure not to bend the slide by accident.

Regards,

Norm

You are very welcome.  I don't know the reason -- others here probably do -- but for newer players, that particular note is very easy to choke, and difficult to get good tone and pitch.  I struggled with it, as well.  After a while, you'll no longer notice the peculiarities of that note.

Cheers,

Norm
