11. Better Players
« on: November 28, 2011, 10:22:44 PM »
Many of us (myself included) are bothered very little by audiences or even TV cameras but are very intimidated by what we feel are superior players. What's your story? No discussion but take all the space you need.

I find that I play best when I am not trying . . .
But that's hard to achieve on chrom, since it is so demanding . . . but I am getting there . . .

I got into the chromatic at 57; to me, the world is awash in better players.I feel like I'm playing catch up big time.I didn't encounter a player at SPAH that wasn't worth listening to for one reason or another.I think I'm more intimidated by an audience than by better players;I usually get energized when good or better players are around.-Greg

I'm inspired and in awe of better players, even those I have no desire to emulate, like really good diatonic players. It's hard to get me nervous about playing in front of them, or any audience. Maybe I don't know any better.

Maybe I do.

Hello, Nerve Enders.

Everyone plays the harmonica better than I do, but the superstars really make me nervous.

The ones who made the most impression (and were patient enough to listen to me) were Jerry Adler, Cham-Ber Huang and Douglas Tate. I couldn't do anything right.

They were all very kind, and made no comments.

Best Regards

Agree - superior players cause me to "mouse up" as Eddie Gordon called it.

I wouldn't have the temerity to play in front of a better player - unless s/he was teaching me. But hey! give it time, my ego may inflate and my playing improve to the point at which this could become an issue.
