We sang this in church today. I had heard it before but never tried to play it. This evening I looked up the sheet music. The music is from a classical piece by Gustav Holst. It is in Bb and uses the Bb below middle C. This is played on the Suzuki SCX56 into a hand held SM58. No effects.

This is another reason I like the chromatic. On this tune I am reading sheet music (you can tell by the way my head moves left to right and the way I have to tilt my head to bring my progressive lenses into focus!).  There are a lot of accidentals in this tune. By ear I would probably change several of these notes, to the detriment of the original music. With the music I'm off to the races in just minutes and also get it right.
Just cell phone video, so the sound isn't the greatest.

Hello, Rex.

Is the tune in your post "Jupiter", from
"The Planets", by Gustav Holst?

Holst was an important English composer,
living from 1874-1934.

Yes. I know it as a hymn. It seems at one time in the past it was not uncommon to use melodies from classical pieces or from folk tunes to write hymns. I suppose that was before copyrights. People took a nice melody and added words to it and, bingo, you have a hymn!

Exactly!  And often they wouldn't use the entire song ... just a portion that suited the needs of their lyrics!

Almost a year ago I retired. Since I had extra time (where did THAT go?) I decided to learn to play the chromatic in 12 keys in 12 months. Some here may remember my post about that. Some may remember my post early last year whining about how the sharp keys were giving me trouble and wondering if I should get an A harp.   :)  Anyway, I persevered and stayed with my C. It did get easier with practice. Last night I was going through my songs and noticed I had quite a few in different keys so I made a list in an attempt to go through all the keys. Here is that attempt, tried for the first time today. There are mistakes, but I am very happy with the outcome and will declare my little project successful. I mostly used old hymns to avoid copyright issues and also because I like old hymns. Comments and criticism are welcome.

Thanks Age. Of course,  I still have a ways to go. I have been dabbling with the chromatic for over 3 years, but just a few songs in 3 or 4 keys. Just got serious a year ago. You once said that knowledge of keys builds on each other. I found that true. Power through a tough spot and then the next one would be easier.

It's always a treat when, just like that, from outta nowhere, you find that you can do something that you never could before, ("Hey! I can play in E flat!! Bwaaaahahaha!) and it sounds good to boot, then that little something just becomes another "arrow in your quiver.". Way kewl! 8)

Hello, Rex (Beads).

One of my favorite symphonic pieces is
"Appalachian Spring", by USA composer
Aaron Copland (1900-1990).

It has a melody taken from a religious hymn,
known as the "Shakers' Hymn". It also has
other titles, including "The Lord of the Dance".

Have you searched for it? You might enjoy it.

Other melodies from popular tunes, converted
to religious tunes, include "What Child Is This?"
("Greensleeves", unknown composer, circa 1500?);
and "Going Home," also named "From the New World",
("Symphony #9"), by Czechoslovakian composer
Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904).

Best Regards, Stay Healthy

JB

Hi Rex,
My heartfelt congrats on your success in learning all 12 major keys on C Chromatic. I am one of those who aspire to do the same and am envious of your early arrival at the finish line. My humble hope is that I may arrive at the destination pretty soon. When I reach the finish line, I may try to share my attempt like you do here.
Cheers,
Gene

Thanks Gene. I  wouldn't say I have "arrived ". This is just where I am at 12 months into the project. If you ask the more experienced players they might say the journey never ends! E still needs work and I don't really use B or F# at this time.

Hey Gene, "early" needs to be put in perspective. Decades ago when I learned the guitar it took much longer than 12 months to learn 12 keys. When I tried this on chromatic I already knew how many sharps or flats were in each key and the intervals in major and natural minor scales. Plus how to read music and count time. If chromatic was my first instrument I would probably know about 3 keys now.

I've heard there are over 2000 chords on a guitar, and a whole bunch of different scales, but I don't know any "keys" other than the 12 majors and minors. Different  "positions," yeah, but keys? just those 12 majors and minors, and changing keys requires little more than a move up or down on the fretboard. Speakin' o'which, Think I'll break out into  song on the old Madeira ;D ;D

(hold your ears, cuz I really suck ;D)

The little I know about music, I learned from playing the guitar, and if you don't play any other instrument besides the harmonica, you're really cheating yourself. You'll also find that playing one actually helps you with the other is a lotta ways. I'm no great guitar player by any stretch, but even if I don't have a good grasp on the names of all the notes, when I play the Chromatic, there's almost always a picture of a my guitar neck in the back of my mind. Kinda gives me a "leg up" whenever I play.

E was one of the last keys I learned. Still need to work on it. Tonight I was flipping through sheet music and found this in E. It uses all four of the sharps that are in E. It also uses the B below middle C. I played it on the SCX56. On a 12 it would need moved up an octave. This isn't super smooth, but this is recorded 5 minutes after putting the sheet music in the stand, and in a key I'm not up to speed on yet. So I consider this a noodle and practice.

Yeah, E's not too bad, but it IS definitely one of my clumsy keys. I can play it but it's a bit of work (for me) to make it "sing."  :P

Well done, Rex!  I figure if I can sing along with a hymn then it's being played nicely.  Believe me, I've heard a few organists and pianists who played Faith of Our Fathers in a very unrecognizable way!
Great progress :)

Noodled this out tonight by accident. Some notes I played reminded me of this tune and I wound up playing this by ear. No idea the key. It starts on an F and ends on a G but it has Bb, Eb, and Ab notes in it. Every once in a while I will play a tune by ear and have no idea what key it is, but most of the time I know what key I'm playing. By the way, Youtube told me there was a copyright claim on it but it was ok to leave it up, they will just run ads on it but I won't get paid (my channels are not monetized anyway).

This is just practice. I stumbled in a few places. I have been working on this piece by Bach for over 2 weeks. Got the score from flutetunes. Decided today to record it and see how it's coming. It may be beyond my skill level. Bonfiglio has nothing to worry about from me!  I hope Tom (Grizzly) sees this. He knows this stuff and might offer advice.
