Danny G's 2023 Harmonica Party
« on: August 03, 2022, 12:08:42 AM »
I recently acquired an exceptionally nice 16 foot garage door with all of the hardware for the price of going next door to pick it up.
Yesterday I got this 50 foot long semi trailer that I'm going to cut open to fit that garage door and build a stage for the next July party

Love it, Danny!  The garage door will be sort of the "curtain" for the stage!  No more installing a tent on a flat trailer.
Hope all is well.  Your party has given me a world of memories!

We had a heck of a time getting that thing down the driveway. They pushed it down backwards with a big Bobcat.
Took a whole day to clean it out and patch a half dozen holes in the roof but now it looks great inside. No more worries about the wind catching it and blowing it away or rain screwing up the electronics. Besides, that's 500 square feet of lawn I won't have to mow. I was getting a little bored and now I have another project in the works.

LOL - you were actually LOOKING for a new project? You, my friend - are an absolute trip!  ;D ;D ;D

It looks as if this will be an amazing stage. Love the idea. Now I'm assuming your 'next project' will be to build a handicapped ramp at one end? ;) (just in case you run out of things to keep you occupied.) lolol

I wasn't really looking for a new project Scotty, but putting a ten by 20 foot tent on an 8 by 20 foot trailer takes a couple of days every year. Then lighting has to be hang then everything has to be carried up and afterward put away in the barn. Opening a 16 foot garage door takes less than a minute even if you do it by hand. Cutting the opening and installing the door and permanently installing wiring will likely take a lot of work and time but once done it will make getting ready for the party easier. Besides a lot of stuff can be safely stored inside year round. At my age it seems to gets harder every year so I'm trying to make having more future parties possible by eliminating my having to crawl my getting too old butt up ladders, hanging lights, running extension cords, audio cables speakers etc..  Fail to plan, plan to fail.

I don't play golf or go to the gym but because I worked on the party and have been cutting up trees into firewood I lost 10 pounds since spring. (not mentioning that there is no refrigerator out in the woods helped) Made it to 1 pound under what I weighed when I was in high school this morning.

My teasing was because you DO always work much too hard --and it seems that it's long past time to have someone else do all that really hard work (including cutting the hole for the new door, the electricity, wiring, and all the other 'stuff' that will go along with turning this trailer into a stage. I'm sure those who attend your parties truly appreciate all of your hard work, but I distinctly remember your nearly cutting off your hand - and the incredible pain and suffering you went through, not only physical - but in having to work to get back to playing chromatic again. You should be the Supervisor now, while some young people are doing all of this. Anyway--that's quite an accomplishment--getting to your High School weight--I know I'll never get there (probably good, since I was quite underweight then), but it would be nice to be back in shape. Sigh. Presumably that included your tummy as well. Don't worry, it's in safe hands - Fred found it and is keeping it safe. Seems he even found someone else's as well. :-[ ;D ::)

Hey Danny—
I can’t make it, but I have a repair customer who lives in Ohio who would love to attend.
He seems to play pretty good, and he paid me, so I find him to be of good moral character (although he doesn’t drink anymore, so that’s out).
Can I extend an invitation? He doesn’t use email or the Internet, otherwise I would simply point him to you.

Oddly enough, his name is Danny See! No joke!

I’m now loading my van for an early Friday start.  I may take some sightseeing detours along the way.
I told my stay-at-home mrs I may extend my journey and she’s ok with that since she has her company coming.

Just got home. We had folks there from several states from coast to coast. Whatta great time!!! Format was a bit different this year, but we still had a riot! Almost rained once, but didn't. Even if it wouldda rained, Danny G had a contingency plan. ;D  For all you guys what missed it; Yep, YOU MISSED IT!

Besides all the food and fellowship, swimming, bonfire and stuff we even fit in a little BB gun shoot out behind the ole "party barn" which was a lotta fun as well. LockJaw and I provided all the ammo and all the (non-lethal) shootin' irons.  ;D

They hosted the Ohio State Harmonica Championship competition right there on the grounds. We had an unusually large (actually the largest I can remember) "play-along" with three guitars, a bass, a Clarinet, keyboard, drums, bongos, tambourines, two digital saxophones a trombone (hello :o) spoons, twenty harmonicas and prolly some other stuff that I missed. Whatta hoot!

Brother Paul Chalmus from Baltimore (who we missed for the last four years) even showed up. Out-stinkin'-standing! 8)

Yeah, Good times! Just what the doctor ordered. 8)

It was a fun, memorial party with soooo much variety of food, music, visiting friends and especially enjoyed the young kids learning gun safety and watching them enjoy a new sport safely.  Age, you did a good teach-in for them.
What a great time we had again thanks to Danny and Linette and excellent cooks!  Ok, musicians galore too.
WOW
Oh yeah, I forgot my foldable rocker so I just HAVE to go back.  Lol

Yeah, I really like that chair. I was sittin' in it, next to Chalmus, for the play-along! Maybe, when I go back to pick up whatever I realize that I left there, (I ALWAYS forget something :P) I'll pick it up and bring it here (for safe-keeping) till next year.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

There's more to guns than "playing gangster," eh?  Yeah, they were just BB guns, but what better thing to learn on? I enjoyed working with those kids.

Yeah Danny G has lotsa stories of all kinds of stuff folks have left there over the years mostly from scatterbrained guys like me who'd forget his head if'n it 'twernt attached. When we left on Friday night, I finally remembered to take my little bass amp home (that I left there last year) Heck, even when we go down there to visit, I forget to remember to bring home stuff. :P Now I'll take inventory to see what I might have left this time. ;D

Danny said he's thinking of making a "Stuff that A.J. forgot" box.  Last year, I finally brought home some glasses that I left there four years ago.  Does "Gettin' old" suck or what? ;D

Early in the evening Friday Danny laughed that I hadn’t left anything last year for him to hold.  Maybe he tricked me into forgettin the rocker. Yeah AJ, you should take it home for safe keeping for me.  Thataway I’ll have a new destination next trip to yer area.  I need a road-trip, after we get back from about five thousand mile upcoming trip to Arizona and sightseeing points unknown.
I hate hot summers, specially in the desert but we’re going anyways.

Haven't figured out yet what I left this time. (If I didn't, it might be the first time in eighteen years that I actually came home with everything I went down there with) If we get down there in the next couple weeks, I'll bring your chair  up here so you guys have an excuse to divert up this way on yer way back from Azzeronna. Yep! That would be pretty kewl! We can even go right next door to my son's and shoot.  ;D ;D Howzatt?

Danny and All

Davis and I drove back to SC yesterday.  We stopped in Canton at 9AM, and visited the Pro Football HOF for a bit over 2 hours, so we left there around 11:15.  From the time we hit New Philly until we got to Beckley, WVa, it rained.  Tough driving at times, but we just took our time.  Stopped at a Cracker Barrel in Beckley and gassed up the Popmobile.  We arrived in Columbia at 8:30 ... all safe and sound.

Both of us can't thank everyone enough for the great time we had.  Danny, Linette, all of the folks who helped with cooking, cleaning, setup, tear down ... what a lot of work it takes!  The result was a wonderful time of renewing friendships, making new friends, joining in (or at times when my lips got sore, just listening!) to some great and fun music.  Always fun to see Phil and Tony Sardo, and to play along with them.  Their wives, Carol and Ginny are wonderful ladies, and real troopers!  The "jam" session that started late Saturday afternoon and lasted until about 10PM was amazing.  Chris, Paul, Ken, Mike, Jeff, Davis, KC, Bruce, George, and "the other guitar player" (sorry, forgot the name!) closed out the evening.  And what a treat getting to see Barb Fedor!  (Oh, and ole' ... what's his name?  Oh, yeah, ... AJ!)

Bottom line:  The folks were wonderful, the food was amazing, the fellowship was like communion, and the music brought us joy.  I thank everyone for being so very supportive and encouraging of Davis.  He truly felt a part of the gathering, and sends his very best to everyone.  Me, too!

I have to admit that all of the work tearing down just days after setting up has me a bit worn out. I took down one of the big tents by myself to see if I could do it. Had the framework standing vertically. It started to fall over so I grabbed it and pulled a couple muscles so besides limping I'm a little bent over. I'll work it out getting ready for to vend at Spah and The Southern Indiana Blues Fest the following week. Really glad everyone had a good time. Doug has every right to be proud of his grandson Davis. A wonderfully talented young man. Don't know when I'll get time to look at the championship videos. The things that were left here this year, a couple of sets of diatonics will be waiting to be claimed next year. It took Age a year to get his amp back.
