Kennedy Center Honors-Frederic Yonnet playing/just a glimpse?
« on: December 29, 2022, 02:57:40 AM »
Caught the Kennedy Center Honors tonight (Wednesday, 12/28) and after the first song to honour Gladys Knight, the
second intro featuring a younger female singer I didn't know showed a quick cut of a harmonica player whom I recognized
as Frederic Yonnet playing very tasteful harmonica. The camera cut away from him almost immediately and back to the
front of the stage and the rest of the program. Wonder if anyone else caught this? I haven't talked to his wife/manager in
a while and am unsure if he's still teaching in Maryland? He toured with Prince for a while and has performed with Stevie
Wonder as well. Fantastic player.

Oh, Glad you saw it, Rich. It was a great show - that I stumbled upon by accident. I haven't been watching anything entertaining
in a while (mostly due to being still so sad about the loss of my little fur-baby),but was changing channels to put on my usual soothing music and glimpsed it, so was very happy that I didn't miss this year's honors. I personally respect those who devote
their time, money and talent to good works and helping others so this year's was especially good. Gladys Knight's songs got me
through quite a few tough times in my life as well - so it was really enjoyable. Fred Yonnet - I believe might have come to SPAH
at one point - is originally from France but lives in the US. Boundless energy and is a real talent. I'm surprised his name doesn't
come up more often. Now I need to go to facebook to see if I can send a note to his wife Carla. :)

A Happy and Healthy New Year to you and yours as well as all other SlideMeisters. thank you.

Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, not so much, but I L-O.-V-E Gladys Night! (with or without the Pips) Long-time favorite of mine.

At some point they will have the clips on youtube from last night (although it was actually done on December 4th). They
HAD the Pips! They danced and sang as background to the singers (including Patti LaBelle) who took over Gladys' songs -
first up was Midnight Train to Georgia (one of my top favourites) since she and the other honorees were up in the 'box'
wearing their beribboned medals.
All of the performers were excellent and did justice to her music as well as to the others, who included Amy Grant and U-2
(all 4 members of the Band), George Clooney and another elderly woman pianist originally from Cuba whose music I didn't
know, but she was reputed to have perfect pitch from childhood and was hired to play for the very first ballet company in
Harlem and became their conductor.  While some of her music was a bit 'jangly-jazz' for me, it was still a terrific show. Bebe
and Cece (sp) Wyans performed gospel - related to Amy Grant (?) unsure, since I was feeding the cats and dogs at the same time.

I missed the whole thing  :(  Except for an occasional movie, we haven't had the TV on in years. I dropped Verizon FIOS 3 years ago, as most content became mostly just drivel, as the monthly fees kept creeping up. We have a solid HD signal via rooftop open-bay antenna, and a wifi hotspot for internet, which has worked well for streaming.

I'm wondering if the Kennedy Center Honors can be seen on any of the streaming services. I've got to look for that.

Wills: it seems it's available to stream on Paramount plus. The article lists it 'for free' but then one actually has to sign up
for their free trial (after probably paying for the monthly subscription in advance) 'which one can cancel anytime'. While I
thoroughly enjoyed the show - I had thought it would eventually be available on CBS where it aired or on Youtube.

PS: found this link - it shows the young ballerinas dancing to Tania Leon's music although the pianist is honouring her while
she is in 'the box' with the other honorees. https://www.cbs.com/shows/kennedy_center_honors/

I couldn't open any of the other clips at this point - probably my recalcitrant computer. :)

Fred came to spah in 03 (Columbus). Same year as Philip Achille. He is French and Martiniquean. A totally UNreal player. Doesn't get all that much recognition. Much the same deal as Rachael Plas. Along with Jerome Perelevedes, arguably the best 3 alive today.
