Hohner Super 64 X
« on: March 01, 2007, 11:20:28 PM »
Just bought a new Super 64 X and think it's really great.  Black covers and gold mouthpiece.  Heavy!

The Super 64 X is kind of like having a grand piano instead of a spinet.  Anyone else have one?  Would like to know what you think about it.

In my opinion, I think you'll enjoy having the Super 64X, it's worth every penny you spent on it.

They're great - until the wheels fall off...... I've got two - one customized and the other out of the box..... That one tends to leak... The other customized one is ok, but it's starting to go out of tune.... I'm eventually going to send it back to Hohner and have them overhaul it -OR send it to Bill Romel - he does good work.

I'm told this eventually happens with all harmonicas. What's made your 64x go out of tune? How does it compare to other harmonicas?

After some months my 64 copes with detuned reeds in its lowest register; much more so than my other harmonicas do.

@Boz: if the super 64x's are at least as good as the super 64's - which I have every reason to believe - you're bound to be a happy camper. Besides good lookers, they're a marvelous play.

Playing it hard and a lot...  I would not only perform with the 64X, I'd practice about 2 hours a day with it.  The reeds move with every blow or draw - do it enough and boom, they go south....

I like the 64x for it's looks and the tone is good, but the one's I had leaked more than the Miesterklasse - which, once you get it customized, runs pretty good.

If you want a pretty and unusual harmonica, have Bill Romel put wood on the comb and make up wooden cover plates for the axe...

Rommie:
Over the past few years I've collected a dozen Super 64x's.  I've had reeds replaced on all of them except the one I bought used last year in New Jersey. All of them have played beautifully right out of the box. Most of them had gold worn from the mouthpiece before reeds started going south. It's been my experience that the 64x is a good quality instrument. I've never had one that was leaky and it surprised me to read that you not only have one, but two.
Personally, I think that for the price you have to pay for Hohner's Meisterklasse, it shouldn't need customizing to make it run pretty good.

Bought a Hohner 64X some years ago. hated the rattling and poor response. It was new. Fast Fwd. to 2004 when Ken Smith bought a load of Harmonicas from someone getting out of harmonicas. He sold the half dozen 64's and some other stuff, but gave me the pick of the litter... the Hohner 64x, a real beauty just like Danny G. says. Airtight, responsive and a great horn for ballads. Guess you can get a lemon and get turned off and then you get a good one and get turned on. Ain't that life?

To Danny G

I got both Miesterklasse harmonicas customized, not because they ran bad - I just wanted them to run better..  The one is in wood and it's beautiful - it even impressed my wife and after forty some harmonicas, she don't impress easy.

And regardless of the "scientific test" somebody was running, I think the tone with wooden covers is a BIT different.  I also think that the CX12, which I'm not real found of, can sound much more mellow than a metal covered ax.

But, what do I know?

The shape under the hood may be more of an influence; but I do notice that the covers on my Super 64 seem to have their own resonance, even with my paws on them, that the CX 12 doesn't have. There seems to be a metallic ring to them that the CX 12 and the CBH 2016 don't.

John:
It's good to see you're here on SlideMeister !
I'm happy to say that yes it's the same harp I got from you in New Jersey. Fine instrument !
If you're coming to Buckeye, bring along anything that's too big for your hands.
Thank you again.
